Maunday Thursday

Post by rstrats »

Does anyone who is familiar with Maundy Thursday, the day during Holy Week which commemorates the washing of the feet and last supper of the Messiah with the apostles know what part of Thursday that this took place - during the night time at the beginning of Thursday, or during the daytime toward the end of Thursday?

You initially said that three days and three nights means any part of the calendar day. I asked for your source for that. You provided a The Jewish Encyclopedia link.

Your link says: "The [calendar] day is reckoned from evening to evening—i.e., night and day..."

I replied that that is not the same thing as your comment; "Three days and three nights means any part of the calendar day..."

You replied with: "In Jewish communal life part of a day is at times reckoned as one day; e.g., the day of the funeral, even when the latter takes place late in the afternoon, is counted as the first of the seven days of mourning; a short time in the morning of the seventh day is counted as the seventh day; circumcision takes place on the eighth day, even though of the first day only a few minutes remained after the birth of the child, these being counted as one day."

I thought your posts were trying to justify the lack of a 3rd night which would be the case with a Friday crucifixion. If I'm wrong about that I apologize.
Apology accepted.

When did Jesus drink the cup that the Fathers protection was withdrawn?
First night, was Thursday night,
First day, Friday
Second night, after sunset of Friday,
Second day, at the tomb, Saturday,
Third night, after sunset of Saturday,
Third day, the resurrection.

Luk 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

First night when the Father's protection to Jesus was withdrawn the moment Jesus drank that cup.

Luke 22:42-44
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Luke 22:47-48
47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

So, you're saying that the first night was the first half of Thursday when the Messiah instituted the Lord's Supper.

What was going on the second night during the first half of Friday?

First half of Friday? Do you mean during Friday daylight?
Based on Jews days reckoning, anytime of the day counted as a day, not as 24 hours to become a day.

Luke 13:32
32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

No. The first half of Friday was night time.

Jesus body was taken by Joseph of Arimathea and laid Him in his own tomb. Jesus was on the tomb by after sunset of Friday.

Matt 27:57-60
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

You wrote in post #32 that the "First night was Thursday night".

I asked you in post #33, "First night for what?"

You replied in post #34, " First night when the Father's protection to Jesus was withdrawn the moment Jesus drank that cup".

I then asked you in post #35, "So, you're saying that the first night was the first half of Thursday when the Messiah instituted the Lord's Supper. What was going on the second night during the first half of Friday?"

You replied in post #36, "First half of Friday? Do you mean during Friday daylight?"

I then replied to you in post #37, "No. The first half of Friday was night time."

You replied in post #38, "Jesus body was taken by Joseph of Arimathea and laid Him in his own tomb. Jesus was on the tomb by after sunset of Friday."

Are you saying that the Messiah was placed in the tomb during the first half of Friday?

If you mean that "first half of Friday" as Friday daylight, yes, Jesus body was taken from the cross after the ninth hour, in Jewish time reckoning, the ninth hour corresponds to 3 p.m.

Matt 27:45-46
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
