Paradise on Earth

Post by onewithhim »

When I learned that the Bible speaks of a restored Garden of Eden and the restoration of mankind to the perfection and endless life that Adam forfeited, I was thrilled. Who doesn't want to keep living on this beautiful earth, with our loved ones, and being able to do all the things we love to do---endlessly?

If God said to you today, "When do you want to die?" would you say "now!!"? I don't think very many people would say that.

We CAN live forever here on Earth. The Bible tells us that we can.

Matthew 5:5
Psalm 37:9-11,29

Peace to you all,
[Replying to Capbook in post #3160]

I know I am coming into this discussion late, and I am not sure what the back and forth is really about, but I understand Capbook to be directly stating what he means:

Earth (in this context) does mean 'inhabitants of the land.'

BUT...

"Inhabitants of the land" means humans - AND - animals - AND - plants.

Not just humans.

Like from Psalm 150:6...

Let every living, breathing thing Praise JAH.

Every living and breathing thing includes humans, animals, and plants. All of these are being called upon to praise JAH.

Does that help?

Peace again to you all.

M'y question is : if I am writing about the President of the United States but instead of saying
The President of the United States talked with Vladimir Putin.
I say ...
The Whitehouse talked with Vladimir Putin.
I have used a METONYM correct?
But what if I am writing about land inhabitants but instead of saying
land inhabitants sing .
I say ...
The EARTH sings
Have I used a METONYM ?

One of the lexicon definition of "earth" is land inhabitants.
Did you not interpret "earth" as human society? Yes or No.
But what if I am writing about land inhabitants but instead of saying
land inhabitants sing .
I say ...
The EARTH sings
Have I used a METONYM ?
1. Do you accept that land inhabitants includes people, animals, some fowls etc?
2. If yes, then the earth sings, which include people, animals, some fowls and etc.
3. Then for me that is the correct metonym/substitution, not just the human society.

So saying EARTH instead of "people, animals, some fowls etc" would be a metonym correct?
My question therefore for you is:

Are there any METONYMS in the bible?
PSALM 66:4 King James Bible
All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah.

Metonym explained as substitute for something.
Earth (erets) one definition is land inhabitants.
Land inhabitants includes people, animals, some fowls etc.
If you say "earth as substitute to people, animals, some fowls etc."(metonym applied) I think no because earth has many definition.
It might be "land inhabitants as substitute to people, animals, some fowls, etc."
But it could never be "human society" as substitute to earth.

It has been shown over and over that "human society" can be the definition of "earth" in many places. See Genesis 11:1. ("Now all the earth continued to be of one language.")

Can you show me lexicon that the word "earth" during that time of usage in the Bible is human society?

Not exactly, let's read the dictionary definition again...

METONYMY

: a figure of speech consisting of the use of the name of one thing for that of another of which it is an attribute or with which it is associated...
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/metonymy
  • What is the name we give to the things that live on this planet?
  • What is the name we give to the planet itself ?

You equates land inhabitants to human society.
Does human society includes animals, some fowls and etc.?
