I was reading about the bravery of Nurse Edith Cavell who saved lives in WW1 and was executed for her efforts. Jesus seems to have blasphemed or insulted the religion of his time and was consequently executed. In history many people have given up their lives for others but only in metaphor did Jesus give his life for others. He is fabled to have destroyed death - after him there was no need to bury people for they didn't die, at least in theory. In practice people did die.
It would seem Jesus should not be on the list of those who saved others, unless we count his medicinal work, which would put him alongside some junior doctors.
Did many others do more for mankind than Jesus?
What good did Jesus actually do?
Did others do more than Jesus for humanity?

No demeaning intended. I shall leave you, though, to tot up the numbers of 'heroic' sacrifices committed by Christians compared to those of other religions.
Best wishes, 2RM.

Our record books were mainly written by Christians, for Christians about Christians. We have little knowledge of the world where Christ is no redeemer and we know nothing of sacrifices made there.2ndRateMind wrote: [Replying to post 30 by marco]

Many sacrificed victims were indeed Christian, sacrificed by Christians. I recall a tale of an Aztec or Inca ruler who was promised that his body would not be burned (which was strictly against their beliefs) if he became a Christian. He became a Christian but was killed and burned nonetheless. Christ did not come to generate peace but hatred and wars. I don't know why. Is that really the best heaven could do?

Re: Did others do more than Jesus for humanity?
Post #33I think we have not enough information to say Jesus was not successful. It is possible that his disciples had courage. But when Jesus was captured and killed, they may have lost it. But I can accept that maybe it was not the real reason. Other reason could be to prove that he is who he claims to be.marco wrote: Then Jesus was singularly unsuccessful.
John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"
So much for being convinced by the raising of a corpse. It makes one think there was no such miracle.

In mathematics when one potential solution lets us down we try another. In fact trial and error is used successfully on many occasions. I suppose this applies in theology - when one explanation fails, we just substitute another until we get one for which there is no glib reply.
Jesus did a lot to make the nebulous area of heaven and angels credible; I cannot see what practical good he did for humanity, but then he accepted his purpose wasn't to help, but to hinder, build barriers and generally make life tougher.
