Given the arguments already tabled in this thread, it seems to me that it is unavoidable for anyone NOT to kill/murder, therefore the command not to do so, slots into the rhetorical.

Incidentally it appears organised religion often takes the position of condemning natural activity as being sinful, therefore always in the 'win' position of a win/lose rule-set of invented laws specific to that purpose.

For the most part, 'The Lord is my Shepard' = 'The Law is my Shepard'. There is no difference between 'The Law' and 'The Lord'.

That at least, is the surface argument. We all know that natural processes can be harmful when practiced without attention to details and proceeding with caution rather than with reckless abandon, so laws can be created with that in mind - people do need shepherding, but to be over-zealous about it, brings its own problems.

Murder refers civilian laws applied not during war time. War is completely something else. War sticks to common war ethics back to the point when it occurred. In a nutshell, you can't be more merciful than what you enemies did. Killing everyone to get the plunder was not an uncommon war practice back then.

Moses, as recorded, was asked to eliminate the Canaanites in order for Israel to survive the situation. If they don't they may be finally outnumbered and wiped out and thus disappeared in history. If they don't the purity of the religion won't last till today. In a nutshell, God's salvation won't reach today's humans if the Canaanites were not wiped out.

It actually implies that the morality difference between God and men is that, God's morality ties to souls while human morality ties to human bodies. God can thus choose to kill the "already dead" for Israel to survive history to bring in salvation for today's humans. Or else, mankind will wind up in hell.

Midianites may not be as hardcore as other Canaanites who worshiped Baal by sacrificing their own children. They may allow their children to adapt the religion of their husbands. Thus the only band of humans still considered as savable are the virgins by marrying the Jews and adapting the Jewish religion.

God count souls while humans count bodies. While in a certain sense or from a certain perspective, we don't call who dropped the atomic bombs in Japan murderers.
