Is Canada racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc. ?
Post #1Canada has put a moratorium on young male Syrian immigrants. Does that make that a terrible country? Does the fact that they were not given a statue with a platitude on it excuse actions that these United States have being criticizes for?

Post #2To be clear, that is unaccompanied adult males. Those who are part of families are allowed in as are all children. This does not sound like an unreasonable precaution. Canada is expending considerable energy and money on the effort to accommodate refugees entirely on humanitarian grounds with no legal obligation to do so. Considering recent and ongoing events, why should they not be allowed some precautions?bluethread wrote: Canada has put a moratorium on young male Syrian immigrants. Post #3I can cut them some slack since as you mentioned unaccompanied males and as a matter of financial unfeasibility of maintaining a verification process similar to our own. That being said the US should be stepping up in accommodating refugees. We should be leading on this not following. We have both the means space and ability to take on a larger role and share the burden. Our 10,000 is such a paltry number of the millions of refugees that have been displaced.Ancient of Years wrote:To be clear, that is unaccompanied adult males. Post #4Do they turn away unaccompanied adult females? If not, isn't that sexist? The argument you are giving is the one the is use by those in these United States who oppose Syrian immigration. Yet, that does not seem to phase those who accuse them of being racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc.Ancient of Years wrote:To be clear, that is unaccompanied adult males. No
and
No.
The lines from the poem from Emma Lazurus [frequently misquoted]:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
are not part of the U.S. Constitution.
No country has a duty to accept immigrants. They generally do so according to their labor and population needs, as well as from humanitarian tradition.
As Ancient of Years points out, there may be a rational basis for excluding young men of military age from certain countries, who are travelling without family. The U.S. could probably develop similar screening factors if there was the political will to do so.

Post #6It sounds like Canada is being racist and xenophobic as long one leaves out the mitigating circumstancesbluethread wrote: Canada has put a moratorium on young male Syrian immigrants. Canada is not being a terrible country putting a moratorium on unaccompanied young male Syrians. Surely this will prevent completely innocent young men from emigrating, but young Syrian males are killing civilians and it's rational to takes measures to prevent it.

Post #7"Racist" is the wrong word of course. This has nothing to do with race and everything to do with a specific country and ideology. Under the U. S. Constitution we could not make these distinctions, but otherwise I would propose a restriction on religious fundamentalists. The Abraham like "I'll kill innocents if God tells me to" ideologues we could do without.Hamsaka wrote:It sounds like Canada is being racist and xenophobic as long one leaves out the mitigating circumstancesbluethread wrote: Canada has put a moratorium on young male Syrian immigrants. Yes it is sexist, but it's a better policy than accepting literally anyone (by coincidence, I'm sure). The leading Canadian party is unlikely to care. It would be better if they had background checks and better security measures instead. It would be even better if the situation in and around Syria was dealt with.

Yes, Canada's policy of turning away unmarried/unaccompanied adult males is racist, sexist, and xenophobic. It's operating off the stereotype that Syrian (and, more generally, Arab) men are terrorists, and that women are naturally "weak" and "need protection." I won't brand Canada a racist country, but I will say this policy is bigoted and completely ridiculous.
