Where is religion in OWS?

I have ben watching Youtube videos on and relating to Occupy Wall Street several hours each day for over a week, and this is the first one I have seen that was done by a religious person.

Question for debate: Is religion ignoring or avoiding Occupy Wall Street? Should it get involved, and if so how?

OWS seems to be a secular thing. That is, no one mentions God on the loud speaker. It's respectful not to. Why try to find religion in things that aren't there- or even not caring about it?

Unless, of course, you believe all secular things are anti-theistic. Which, disappointingly, some people do.

From what I can see, the only religion being referenced by the OWies is Judaism...and that not so much because of the religion as it is about the people and stereotypes attached to those who are Jews.

And that, most definitely, is 'anti"

I am referring to how organized religion views OWS. What is the Catholic Church saying? Evangelicals? Mormons?

I have no idea what anybody ELSE is saying, but I can tell you what the Mormons are saying...that is, the church. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Bupkis.

This is politics, not religion.

Googled it, this is the closest I got to a "statement" about it.

I know woefully little about the Israel and Zionist business. I guess a majority don't like... something there? I really aught to look up some info on the place. Anyways, it seems like it's not foundless hate.

I have been spending many hours every day watching videos and reading all I can find about OWS. I have heard all the usual conspiracy theory wackos including those who are against Jews, but I haven't seen the movement itself talking about them, or any other religion or ethnicity for that matter.

Again, please support or withdraw your claim.

So why then do they use the force of law to stop gays from marrying, stem cell research, and the teaching of evolution in schools, to name a few?

I don't know main LDS views on it, but Huntsman and Romney (Mormon candidates) are the only ones the GOP who are "pro science." I do think they're against homosexual marriage, though.

I don't come around much any more, but apparently there's no one here on Twitter following the OWS movement. If anyone was, you'd know there was a Kol Nidre service in Manhattan, a sukkah, and a simchat Torah celebration, where the entire Torah was unrolled (this also happened in my synagogue). There has been an enormous outcry at some attempts on the Right to smear OWS as antisemitic, which it obviously isn't.

And it isn't all Jews: See here for a story on the "Sacred Space" tent in Boston, which is the most pluralistic cooperation and celebration of various religions that I've ever heard of. Here is a story about the increased reporting on the religious aspects of OWS, together with its missteps. Plus, the Vatican -- and I am no fan of the RCC, as many here know -- has weighed in on these issues as well.

Honestly, has everyone forgotten how to use Google?

Many here know me. I am no right-winger, and certainly no leftist. But I am definitely behind the Occupy Wall Street movement, and I predict that it will continue to grow beyond all expectations. There is something deeply wrong with the economic system here, and it goes beyond tax rates and sleazy banking practices. I've written a couple of essays on it on my blog, neither of which mentions religion (though others there may look familiar).

Be well, all. I may drop by again some day, but don't count on it.
