Speaking as a Southerner, I'd like to weigh in on that. I agree; though I don't regard it as a symbol of "traitors," I do regard it as a symbol of racism and support for racist violence, e.g. lynchings and cross-burnings, and I think it a praiseworthy act to burn it as a statement of opposition to those beliefs and practices.
Some say that the Confederate battle flag is a symbol of Southern heritage and pride and not necessarily of racism, slavery and murder. I suppose that
might be true for some, but those who think that seem to have stood by silently while that flag was adopted by racists and white supremacists as their preferred symbol, and in my opinion they have therefore forfeited that argument. When Southerners who profess to be proud of that heritage speak out as strongly against racists who display it as they do against those who burn it, I'll listen.
I doubt if anyone who wears or displays the Confederate flag regards it as a symbol for
treason, though. Overt racism and support for racist violence is bad enough.
