Is multiculturalism a good idea for a society?

Post by oneforall57 »

It seems like the division in America is getting worse. When everyone accepted this land as a Christian based society there was greater unity. Perhaps our search for political correctness is not the way to go. Would everyone be better off if there was a common ground acceptance? Without this (common ground) are we leaving everything open to liberal interpretation trying to find absolute political correctness?

America is not nor has it ever been a Christian based society.

Hoever, there is a high percentage of citizens who claim to be Christian and the division still exists so Christianity cannot pass the blame on the divisions in this country. How many All Black, White, Asian, Latino Churches are there in this country? I know of several.

Germany is an entirely different ballgame. Their gripe is with with the Turkish workers who helped them rebuild after WWII. (Mighty Christian of them to be upset at them I might add) I agree they should learn the language. I disagree that they have to accept the "cultural norms" as long as their actions remain within the laws of Germany.

Germany is in the SAME ballgame – my neighbor mowed my lawn once but that doesn’t mean he can now build a shed on my property.
A “culture norm is good for a society otherwise you get a liberal nightmare

FYI this once was a Christian based society – you can see some of this at Christmas

Really. You mean worse than when the Christians from the North were killing the Christians in the South?

If everyone would accept that I should be elected supreme benevolent dictator there would be greater unity too.

Yes, racism, sexism, discrimination and intolerance are far superior models.

You mean like the Constitution and the Bill of rights?

What is wrong particularly with liberalism? Liberal is not a bad word in my country.

And some of the First Nations people provided food and assistance to a few Europeans and they came in and took over the entire continent.

What liberal nightmare?

You mean like the Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, Yule, Mistletoe, Solstice ...

You've obviously not celebrated a Japanese-style Christmas.

Human systems behave a lot like natural ones. Increased biodiversity is good for everyone. Its creates a more diverse gene pool with more niche specialization.

When you have homogeneity, you are stuck, its hard to evolve and you will eventually go extinct.

The natives invited us over for dinner once, does that mean we had a right to steal their house?

When was there such a time? As far as I'm aware, the USA was founded on the Constitution, which doesn't mention christianity and originally did not even mention religion at all. The one mention of religion (First Amendment) serves to separate religion from state.

I doubt it's possible for every one of the 300 million americans to agree on even basic political or religious issues. The only way to get millions of people to abide by a set of moral rules is by use of force.

Yes, due to an intrusive government, an open border being ignored by everyone except Jan Brewer, and a horrible economy that has been largely ignored by the Obama Administration (who spent large amounts of time forcing through Healthcare and trying to push through Cap and Trade).
Is multiculturalism a good idea for a society?
Yes and no. America should not be accomidating to the language needs of immigrants. If you want to come and live in this country, you should take the neccesarily steps and put forth the effort to learn this country's language. The immigrant should assimilate to the country, not the other way around.

But aside from that, multiculturalism is by no means a bad thing. Other cultures should be welcomed in this country, one of the greatest thigns about America is that it is an ethnic melting pot, despite what Obama and his lackies say.

I sense that rather common nostalgia for the "Golden Age" of America's recent past -- the Fifties, when the crime rate was low, an ordinary working man could afford to buy a home and his wife didn't have to work to support the family, when there were no protests or public incivility or arguments over abortion or civil rights or injustice. It was a wonderful time.

Unless you happened to be black, or Latino, or a Jew, or a woman who WANTED to work as anything but a secretary, nurse, or teacher, or a pregnant woman who didn't WANT to carry the baby to term, or a nonwhite who wanted to vote or run for office or live in another neighborhood or get a fair trial, or a working man who wanted to join a labor union and get a living wage for doing factory work, or anybody who wanted to interfere with the local Powers that Be, or...

Well, you get the idea. Britain in the 18th Century was that nation's Golden Age, too -- if you were among the landed gentry. For everyone else, it was a nightmare of child labor, poverty, rotten medical care, disease, and brutality.

Multiculturalism is only a bad idea if you miss the dominance and superiority of your own culture and your own class and your own race.

Nostalgia is a lie. There was a lot of really crummy music in the 50s, too. I was there.
