The Problem With A Mormon President?

This isnt a big topic but I am curious as to why so many people are scared of a mormon president? Is there a legit reason or is it just fear of a "cult?"

Quite frankly, I don't trust Romney (and let's be honest, that's who you mean) not to subsidize the LDS Church through the "Faith-Based Initiatives" that Bush installed. It wouldn't be overt, but there's no doubt in my mind that he'd attempt something similar to what Orrin Hatch tried.

Until all Federal funding for Christian institutions gets canned, I think it's prudent not to vote for any representative of a Christian organization for high office.

Im not a fan of Romney either, but this question came from the last election. During it they talked a lot about his religion and I heard a lot of comments like, "I'll never vote for one o' them devil mormons." So im curious as to why some people think that.

Well, even more people wouldnt vote for a homosexual or an atheist..

I really dont want a religious president at all, however coming from another "cult" religion (JW) I tend not to discriminate against mormons as many do.

I have many mormon friends who really are quite progressive and I would love to have them as president! For me, it really does boil down to the individual, however for many its WHAT they are not WHO they are.

It is just my opinion, but I would prefer a political leader with no invisible friends.

It means he wants an atheist/agnostic president.

I wouldn't mind voting for a mormon president (or a jewish president, or a muslim president, etc) as long as they don't place huge emphasis on religion.

I'd way sooner vote for a mormon whose policies I agree with than an atheist that wants to make homosexuality punishable by law, for example.

I wasn't aware there were so many people scared as you report. Where are you gathering this info from? Also, I would imagine concern over getting a cult figure into the Whitehouse would also have some legitimacy to it. For example, I would probably never have voted for a David Koresh or Jim Jones-like figure simply because of my perception of their religious background. Isn't that legit?
