Could an Atheist or Agnostic get elected in the US?

The Religion prez, Bush, said that Atheists aren't even real Americans. I would love to hear him and Jefferson chat on this subject, since Jefferson wrote his son to question even the existence of god. The media/GOP echo chamber would be all over this, 24/7. So, the question is pertinent, since the (majority of) the US are probably the only electorate and Electoral College that would ignore all other qualifications and re-elect the very unpopular Bush over an avowed Atheist or Agnostic, IMO.

I think we already have an atheist congressman, so it's not impossible. Probably will take awhile longer before an atheist becomes president, but I do think it could happen.
