Oklahoma passed House Bill 2656 on April 2010 that states that doctors are not required to inform the mother if they suspect that the fetus may have birth defects. The bills purpose is to prevent lawsuits against doctors from parents in hindsight wish that the doctor had counseled them to abort the disabled child. Supporters of the bill argue that this will provide doctors with protection against unfair lawsuits. However, opponents of the bill state that it will protect doctors who purposefully mislead a woman to keep her from choosing abortion. Opponents also claim that this will lead to a distrust between a doctor and the patient since doctors are allowed to lie to their patients without any consequence. Currently abortions in all states are restricted based on the age of the fetus rather than the condition. Oklahoma legislature has not released information which states that this is a problem in their state or if a certain lawsuit sparked this law. Oklahoma State Senator and majority flood leader has been quoted stating, “The goal of this legislation is just to make a statement for the sanctity of human life. AMA and other official doctor organizations have yet to release a public statement on this new law. Individual doctors however are divided on their position regarding this law.
1. I would not file a lawsuit against my doctor blaming him for medical issues if I trusted him.
2. I believe that doctors let their own morals influence the advice they give patients.
3. I believe that doctors are often at risk for unjustified lawsuits that blame them for the state of the child.
4. I believe that doctors give advice to their patients without bias.
5. I believe that even if a doctor withholds information because they believe it is for the best, that they are violating the trust between the doctor and the patient.
6. I trust my doctor to provide me with the information I need.
7. I don't believe that doctors will misuse Oklahoma's new law in order
to further their own beliefs.
8. I do believe that doctors will misuse Oklahoma's new law in order to further their own beliefs.
9. I do not need to know about a potential health complication if the chances of it occurring are less than 50%.
10. I would be less likely to trust my doctor if this law was in place in my state.
11. The trust between a doctor and a patient is important to me.
12. I believe that doctors should have more legal protection.

Probably to some degree but I think all people do as a rule. When it comes to some issues of medical science they are a little more cut and dried then others.
3. I believe that doctors are often at risk for unjustified lawsuits that blame them for the state of the child.
Absolutely. Especially in the United "We love to Sue" States
