Liberals generally favor government subsidy programs (welfare, social security, medicare), a government regulated market and they favor a type of non interventionist foreign policy. Liberals usually see big coporations as the problem and favor higher taxes and more oppurtunity for poorer americans. Social Liberals are for abortion, gay marriage and illegal immigration
Conservatives generally distrust the government and are propnents of a free market. Conservatives favor a strong national defense and a strict adherence to the constitution. Conservatives are for lower taxes and are generally aganist government intervention and subsidy programs such as welfare. Social Conservatives are aganist abortion, gay marriage and illegal immigration.
So, are you a liberal or a conservative and why?

Re: The Liberal And The Conservative
Post #4I am not sure that I like the biased wording of the question.
Liberals generally favor a mixture of collective and individual responsibility, a well regulated market and respect the sovereignty of other nations. Liberals see that unfettered coporations that see profit as their only goal cannot be allowed to set the national agenda. They favor a tax level that is sufficient to carry out national programs. They strive to provide opportunities for poorer Americans. Social Liberals are for abortion, gay marriage. Social Liberals see that illegal immigration is a human problem with no easy solutions. Social Liberals oppose mindless zero tolerance law and order crackdowns.
Conservatives generally distrust the government and are proponents of a an unregulated free-for-all market. Conservatives favor a strong national defense and a strict adherence to the constitution, except in the area of human rights. Conservatives are for tax cuts regardless of the consequences and are generally against government spending on social causes. Social Conservatives are against abortion, gay marriage and illegal immigration. Social Conservatives are easily seduced by mindless get tough on criminals programs.

Post #5Well, i tried my best to give an objective description of both ideologies. Your description of conservatism seems to be biased.McCulloch wrote:I am not sure that I like the biased wording of the question.

1) "We are seduced by mindless get tough on criminals programs?"
2) "We have a strict adherence to the constitution, except in the area of human rights?"
3) "Conservatives are for tax cuts regardless of the consequences and are generally against government spending on social causes?"

What I am saying is that you are offering a false dilemma.
These are not the only alternatives...though I suspect that you would hold anything that is not conservative as 'liberal'. Such a wonderful perjorative that word isn't it?
What I am saying is that eventually mankind will evolve beyond your mythic worldview. A worldviw marked by a plethora of gods and goddesses, (be it Allah, 'God' or Mammon). For you these are not abstract entities but deeply felt powers, each having a rather direct hand in the affairs of earthly men and women.
For example, I live in a country that has universal healthcare - I would not swap it for the world. Recenty I had a surgical emergency. I had it treated, including hospital care, all medicines and after surgical home care without is costing me a cent in direct out of pocket expenses. For this privilege I pay a small amount of additonal tax in the way of a percentage (around 1.5%) of my income.
SOCIALISM I hear you cry - while I ROTFLMAO.
Mankind WILL evolve beyond your narrow mythic view - no matter what your god is.

Both liberals and conservatives spend tax dollars. Liberals prefer spending on social programs, conservatives on police and military.

From the OP:
I think the use of "illegal" here is a bit of a poisoning of the well, and would prefer the term "immigration reform". Even then, I'm opposed to "market flooding" immigration reform.
I tend to consider myself a 'centrist' relating to the OP, and consider it a bit of a false dichotomy, where it generalizes and requires one to choose one or the other.
I refer folks to McCulloch's Post 4. I generally agree to those points presented, even if they are also generalizations.
As a "social liberal" I'm actually against "illegal" immigration, or even "massive influx of immigrants". Time and again it can be shown such "flooding of the market" is imposed in an effort to lower wages and increase profits of the "powers that be".Opie wrote: >snip general agreement<

Post #10I agree with DeBunkem: that's a false dichotomy.winepusher wrote:Liberals generally favor government subsidy programs (welfare, social security, medicare), a government regulated market and they favor a type of non interventionist foreign policy.
I favor government subsidy programs (welfare, social security, medicare) where they are necessary; I am against waste. I favor a free market with government intervention where it's necessary, as it sometimes is. I favor a non-interventionist foreign policy, but have no problem with diplomatic or even military action where it protects American security. Big corporations aren't the problem; big corporations provide jobs and produce goods. But they do require regulation in some areas to provide for public safety (e.g. the FDA) and to prevent sheer greed from perverting the system in favor of those who can manipulate it (e.g. the recent bank meltdown). I favor higher taxes where necessary to provide services which the people require; it is apparent that healthcare has moved beyond the capability of non-wealthy individuals to obtain in a truly "free market," and that some government intervention is necessary. Whether the recently-passed "reforms" will make things better remains to be seen. I also favor more opportunity for poorer americans (and I can't help but wonder if it is the OP's position that conservatives don't). I think that abortion is none of the government's business, I think that gay marriage should absolutely be legal, and I think that illegal immigration is a huge problem which has not yet been adequately addressed in the US by either side. It is fertile ground for ideologues, on both sides, but I have seen no solutions presented that are anything like adequate or ethical from anywhere.
I am also in favor of any adult American citizen without a criminal record or any record of mental illness having the right to own and carry firearms. I think anyone who wants to burn the flag should be able to burn as many as he likes, and I voted for Barack Obama.
So you tell me: in which bin should I be placed?
I don't identify as either conservative or liberal. My position depends on the issue.
