To all true Christians there is nothing more important to our salvation than "The Atonement of Jesus Christ".
Having said that, is it not therefore extremely important to every individual to understand fully what and how the atonement works for our benefit?
What does the atonement do or does not do?
What is required on our part to receive the full benefits of the atonement?
What and when and by whom did the atonement begin?
Can anyone clearly show all scriptures pertaining to the atonement?
I look forward to hearing your "take" on this most important topic.
Kind regards,
RW

Re: The Atonement
Post #1301Christ as the Surety of His People, His Sheep, His Body the Church accomplished these two things for them in His Surety-ship obedience, He fulfilled the law for them by keeping/obeying all of its Holy Commands, and added to that He came under the Laws curse and condemnation due to their iniquities Isa 53:5 which satisfied the penalty of death due unto them by His Cross ! 68

Re: The Atonement
Post #1304The atoning work of Christ blesses us and turns us away from our sins Acts 3:25-26
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Now even though Peter was speaking to jews at the time, this blessing wasnt limited to them, hence we read in vs 25 it stems from the Abrahamic Covenant which included the Gentiles.
"the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed."
Paul uses the same speech in speaking of the Gospel to the gentiles Gal 3:8
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, iniquities.
So being turned from ones iniquities is a by product of the Abrahamic promise from God "iniquities" So the blessing isnt for the jews only, though they would be the first to experience the blessing of it.

This is also the end in view by the redemptive death of Christ Titus 2:14
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 69

Post #1306It accomplished their perfection forever. Heb 10:14
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
This perfection doth includes their perfect justification before God!

Post #1307Christ death alone accomplished this perfection and secured unto them the Sanctification of the Spirit and remission of sins Heb 10:16-17
16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Post #1309The virtue of Christs death !
It was by His death that the old testament saints received remission of their sins, Hence Heb 9:15
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
This was indicated when Moses and Elijah spoke with Lord about His death, These two perhaps being representative of the Law and the Prophets. Lk 9:30-31
Old testament saints had an interest in the death of Christ and what it accomplished.

Re: The Atonement
Post #1310One of the accomplishments of Christs death is that it resulted in issuing forth a seed. Isa 53:10
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
You see "making His soul an Offering for sin" speaks of His death, which results in seeing His seed, or His posterity spiritually. The same is the testimony of Christ Himself here Jn 12:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
The corn of wheat which falls into the ground and dies is Christ soul being made an offering for sin, and when He dies brings forth fruit which coincides with seeing His seed.
