Gehenna - just a rubbish tip outside Jerusalem?

Post by Wootah »

Many here seem to believe Gehenna is just a rubbish tip outside Jerusalem and not a reference to hell.

Pulling an argument from this video (around the 16-minute mark):

Mark 9 vs 43-49 says: And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46 where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Why does Jesus talk about entering into life and the rubbish tip outside Jerusalem in the same sentence? Do you really believe people thought hey let's follow Jesus so we don't go into the rubbish tip outside Jerusalem or do you think they knew Jesus meant hell?

Also since that rubbish tip's fire is quenched now and has been for a long time then doesn't that mean Jesus is a liar when he says that the fire there never shall be quenched?
Proverbs 18:17 The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.

Human garbage, huh? That certainly does away with the idea of a loving God.
Not in my opinion... if it walks like a duck....
I don't recall asking your opinion. In any case here's another verse that reveals the "love of God":
Jeremiah 25:33

“And those pierced by the Lord on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.
What a sweetheart!

Did I say you did? I do believe one is free to post ones opinion on any challenge or subject as long as it addresses the OP. I will of course bow to moderator clarification if posting personal opinions is prohibited in this subforum.

The word "sweetheart" is not in the text, would it be fair you have just (a) posted a scripture and (b) given your opinion of said scripture?

Clarification appreciated,

Of course one can present one's opinion in this or any other sub-forum. The question remains however, of what value is an unsupported opinion?

To refer to someone else's illustration----Do you feel that people who make lampshades out of human skin are NOT worthy of annihilation? You think God is a "sweetheart" (of course you mean the opposite) for obliterating died-in-the-wool child molesters and people who put babies in microwaves and those that rape and kill without any intention of stopping? God should not destroy those people? Would you like to live next to them?

Mark 9 vs 43-49 says:

1. Gehenna - just a rubbish tip outside Jerusalem?

2. Why does Jesus talk about entering into life and the rubbish tip outside Jerusalem in the same sentence? Do you really believe people thought hey let's follow Jesus so we don't go into the rubbish tip outside Jerusalem or do you think they knew Jesus meant hell?

Good one, Wootah. A new thread that focuses on Gehenna.

This could be interesting.

These are my brief answers to your questions.

1. No, Gehenna was not just that rubbish tip. It had quite a history, which was in Jesus days in about its final chapter.

2. They are in the same sentence as he is talking about eternal judgment.

They knew Jesus was talking about what we call "hell" but what he called Gehenna.

3. No, he was not a liar about the fire being unquenched. He was using the natural Gehenna fire to illustrate supernatural fire.

Supernatural fire? Okay what does "supernatural fire" do (scriptures please).

The fire of God that cannot be quenched.

The eternal fire that Jesus mentioned in Matthew 25: 41.

Yes but what does it do?

(a) causes unending literal agony /anxiety/ a slight headache to ...spirit creatures and invisible immortal souls that exit the body at physical death?

Or

(b) destoys /annihilates /causes all in it to cease to exist?

It basically does what you briefly described in the (b) alternative.

Either or both of us could post at some length on this and similar biblical truth. I know that is what you have been doing for a long time.

But it seems some do not take seriously what God actually says. Instead, the Word is too often misread or misapplied, or something is added to it that is just not there at all.

So, could it be that we end up playing a game we love sometimes and yet hate sometimes - finders keepers, losers weepers.
