Is the Eucharist only symbolic.

" Paschasius Radbertus was the first to formulate the doctrine of transubstantiation in the ninth century. He was opposed by Ratranmus, a contemporary monk at the monastery of Corbie. Ratranmus wrote: "The bread and wine are the body and blood of Christ in a figurative sense" (De corpore et sanguine Christi). This controversy between two Catholic monks shows that both views were present in the Catholic church at least up to the eleventh century. The debate continued until the thirteenth century when the final decision was taken by the Lateran Council in 1215.

The Doctor of the Church, Duns Scotus, admits that transubstantiation was not an article of faith before that the thirteenth century"

They could not ... because they thought the way you do. That was not the end of that controversy ... For a long time the Jews continued to try to demoralize Christianity, saying that they were cannibals.

... Also, as they called themselves brothers and sisters, many even said that they were endogenous and incestuous ... too many myths about Christian beliefs and practices still believed today for some.

The Jews weren't the ONLY ones accusing the Early Christians of cannibalism for their belief in the Eucharist.
Pagan Rome ALSO accused them of this, as we see in the writings of men like Pliny the Younger (112 AD) and Roman historians of his day.

This should be a wake-up call for you - NOT a reason to run from the Eucharist.

I know, they started the game. And NO, again ... It looks to me that you are watching everything in reverse ... That is a wake-up call for you, not for me. :D

It's a wake up call to those who don't think that belief in the Real Presence was a teaching of the Early Church.
It WAS.

MS, it seems to me that you forgot that when Jesus Christ instructed about that symbolism, and instituted the celebration, he was still very much alive.

What does that have to do with it??
Are you saying that God can't turn bread and wine into His Body and Blood??

What other limits do you place on God??

Heck no. I'd like to see one of the thousands of proposed "gods" do that trick -- along with reanimating long-dead (stinking) human bodies and the loaves and fishes trick.

The best illusionists in Las Vegas would probably have trouble with those (though water into wine is not difficult)

ANY of the thousands of "gods" proposed, imagined, worshiped, loved, feared, and/or fought over by humans MAY exist -- awaiting verifiable evidence

Well, maybe you'll get lucky and you'll be here when that happens at the end of time (1 Thess. 4:16-17).
Wear some REALLY strong sunscreen. I recommend SFP 12 million . . .

No thanks. I am not given to delusion or superstition. Threats and promises don't impress me unless they can be shown to be other than imagination and wishful thinking.

Is this recommendation for sunscreen general advice or is this specifically for Zzyzx? If it is specifically for Zzyzx, why is this advice directed to him?

1 Thessalonians 4:18 states:
  • Therefore encourage one another with these words.
How is your warning encouraging?

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

I must assume that knowing is better than not knowing, venturing than not venturing; and that magic and illusion, however rich, however alluring, ultimately weaken the human spirit.
