Sola Scriptura? Then why do Protestants accept the Trinity?

Post by Elijah John »

One of the hallmarks of Protestantism is their adherence to the principle of "Sola Scriptura" or the Bible alone.

But the Bible does not spell out the doctrine of the Trinity. At best, it is only implied in the New Testament. So why do Protestants accept the Trinity when that doctrine is not in the Bible? Isn't the Trinity a Catholic doctrine?
My theological positions:

-God created us in His image, not the other way around.
-The Bible is redeemed by it's good parts.
-Pure monotheism, simple repentance.
-YHVH is LORD
-The real Jesus is not God, the real YHVH is not a monster.
-Eternal life is a gift from the Living God.
-Keep the Commandments, keep your salvation.
-I have accepted YHVH as my Heavenly Father, LORD and Savior.

I am inspired by Jesus to worship none but YHVH, and to serve only Him.

Have you read anything on the Trinity to dispel your notion?

James White - The Forgotten Trinity
Michael Heiser - Unseen Realms - really explores the puzzling passages in the OT.
Dr Michael Brown - nothing in particular but his expertise is Jesus as the Jewish Messiah

My understanding of Catholic vs Protestant is the issue of works. Is God's grace enough or not. If not then God help us :).

I see nothing in the Bible that clearly or explicitly supports the doctrine of the Trinity. It is certainly not spelled out. So why do Protestants accept it?

But I should debate. How do you know YHWH is God? Which verses show his deity. Not just the shema but the sections that show a being in the Bible acting as God?

Revelation 5:13 New International Version (NIV)
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!
We are being told to equally worship God and the Jesus right there.

Also all created things are being told to worship the lamb. Therefore the lamb isn't a created thing.

This is a good question. The doctrine of the trinity was developed +/- 1200 years before Protestantism. The doctrine simply got carried over with of course many others when the Protestants split. It wasn't developed by the Protestants.

One has to wonder why Martin Luther and others didn't reject it. If I'm not mistaken, the early Protestants also held the doctrine that Jesus was both God and man. This of course is another doctrine that is not clearly supported by scripture. Perhaps the Protestants needed to retain the doctrine of the trinity to justify the doctrine of Jesus' divinity.

To me the doctrine of the trinity is the mortar used to hide the cracks formed by trying to meld Judaism and Christianity.

Psalm 100.3 for one example.
Know that YHVH, he is God
.

Where does the Bible say verbatim "know that Jesus, he is God"?

Psalm. 183:18 May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

Mal. 3:16 At that time those who fear Jehovah spoke with one another, each one with his companion, and Jehovah kept paying attention and listening. And a book of remembrance was written before him for those fearing Jehovah and for those meditating on his name.
17 “And they will be mine, says Jehovah of armies, “in the day when I produce a special property. I will show them compassion, just as a man shows compassion to his son who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between a righteous person and a wicked person, between one serving God and one not serving him.

I mean a verse where YHWH is doing a godly thing. Not a verse that just says he is God. I mean anyone can say they are God.

Gen. 1:4, 7, 9.

If you are going to reject the many places where the Bible declares Jehovah (YHWH) to be God, why would we expect you to believe the Bible when it shows Him doing 'godly things'?
