I didn't become a Christian in order to be a different person. Being a changed person was not a factor in why I became a Christian.
But am I different now than before? Of course. It would be too hard to describe all the ways right here. But, I will say that I am different.
One way that I'm different is my viewpoint on life. I have a better sense of purpose, hope, and direction as a Christian than when I was not. I wouldn't say I had no direction or no hope before, but it is much fuller now.

I'm not sure I understand which WHY you are refering to.
Holy cow, I just realized what debating has done to me. I am beginning to examine avenues of thought that previously wouldn't have even occured to me. I think that a good thing. . .
Anyway. . .
I think you mean, "Why do I choose the Christian faith over the others, apologetics aside."
If this is your question then my answer is simply it makes the most sense to my soul. A Christian, a true follower of Christ, should impliment a kind of code in their lives. Almost like the knights of old, a Christian should defend, protect, nurish, and support the weak and downtrodden. They should be as strong as they can so as to be able to withstand the battles of life, spiritual and physical. They should always try and increase their knowledge of humanity, the world and themselves so at to always be aware of their abilities and those of the people around them and to be aware of the dangers and snags that will probably come calling.
Since this is the way I see Jesus, and it fits with my views, I choose to follow along with it.

It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

I'm going to take a stab at resolving what I personally think are the two sides of this argument (please correct me if I'm wrong). One of my favorite statements about the acceptance of a religious belief is this:
It must be both intellectually credible and exestentially satisfying.
Therefore, one most accept a religion (or any belief) only on the ground that it is true. This is balanced by the fact that it is only constitutes a religious belef if it offers personal satisfaction.

The reason I asked this question was...
when you become a christian you life has a meaning.... If you don't believe that you have a purpose in life you have no reason to be...
I mean from a atheists point of few... you live your life till the end, and for what?
You can do the funnest things, you can eat the finest food, you can listen to the best music.... but you are still Doomed..... you are going to die and disappear.... and nobody you now, nobody you ever heard of is worth anything..... just people that exist because of coincident....
that has been used against religion...
I told an atheist the same thing once, and she said that thats the whole point with religion... it's the fear that everyone has... the fear of disappearing after you die... the fear of not existing and not having a meaning.... so people get religious and "belive" that they will live happily ever after.....
Ok... how about another question?
What convinced you to be a christian? why did you choose and for what reason?
I became a christian out of logic.....
that with all thes things that have happened in my life and in the world their must be a God.... and all those things man needs to survive.... ever thought about that? we are either so extremely lucky to be at this spot in the universe and to have all the resources we need to survive.... or their is a God out their that put us here...
I also went trew a couple amazing things a while back that made me feel that I never was alone.... that I always had someone their with me... and so I got to know Jesus
anyway thats my answer to the question...

That definitely was the thing that made me take the idea of religion seriously. I can definitely agree that it is accutely important to all humans.Udanor wrote:The reason I asked this question was...

As for intellectual reasons- this site is proof that it is a very long argument. To generalize, I couple many of the reasons to believe with the fact that most who disagree (in my own flawed opinion) seem to have a personal (ie non-rational) difficulty with the idea of anything supernatural.

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.
His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.
The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.
My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.
By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.
Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead
Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.
Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.
Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.
Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.
Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!
Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon
A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.
I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots
Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold
We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver
Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.
For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes upon Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
I am engaged and indeed married to God because He showed me He is the Lilly of the Valleys. I have a romance with Him. That is why I choose to stay with Him, He romances my soul and woes my desires. He knows my blackness scorched from the sun and calmness of the sin in my ways. Yet He sought me out. He went looking for me and when He found me He gave me Himself. I was so touched by this that I gladly said "yes I will marry you" and did give myself to Him.
The King gave Himself to me for all eternity and my desire was then to give myself for all eternity to Him.

I think that the three most difficult questions that I was ever ask in my entire life was
"Why are you a Christian?"
"How do you know it is true?"
"How do you know that you truly believe?"
It is different when explaining to a believer and a non-believer.
This is my answer to all three...
The Bible isn't quite like the text of other religion (excluding Judaism and Catholicism)
The Bible is more of a History book of events regarding this higher power, God. I believe the bible because it is not addressed TO anybody but rather address FOR everybody. The Bible is a guide for us to follow more than an entertaining story book and it is also not a man made religion like Buddhism. It was transcribed by men but the words were from God. Also, such an evil world full of evil people could not have survived this long without some power watching over it.
The Bible is a compilation of Historic documentations that even the Egyptians and Romans agree with. That is how I know the bible to be true. I don't think that any amount of organization and purpose could have orchestrated such a story of the bible across countries at that time.
Nobody knows for sure that they truly believe, only God knows. What you do sort of realize are the changes in you that happen after you gain the Holy Spirit. I'm not talking about a spiritual high. I'm talking about years of changing the way you think, you act, you talk, and even the way you dress. You just become "Reborn"
