I do not intend for this to be a debate about to our current administration.
Here is the scenario:
There are 2 candidates:
One is an atheist who has promised strong action in regards to pollution and global warming. He favors gay marriage, abortion rights and keeping prayer out of public schools. He does not attend church and has promised to block any attempt to teach the creationism in public schools. He is single and comes from Oregon.
The other candidate is a Christian. He has always gone to church, has a beautiful wife and children. He is from North Dakota. He also believes that Pastor John Hagee and other major fundamentalist Christian leaders are correct: The apocalypse is upon us and the 2nd coming of Jesus is eminent so we must prepare at all costs.
Who gets your vote?
Appocolypse or atheist?

It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

I pick the guy from Oregon (even though I am in a state adjacent to ND).
I'l pose another question:
Who would you pick?:
Candidate A: Christian, against abortion but does not favor a total ban but rather a regulatory process involving an application (something like licensing a gun), very pro-environmental and anti-war. Against the death penalty. Ambivalent on gay marriage. Honest as the day is long.
Candidate B: An atheist. Backed by big oil. Has changed views on a number of big issues for political expediency. Also touts his environmental views, but her votes show a tendency to forget these when oil is involved.

Well easyrider who would get you vote?Cmass wrote:LOL!Easyrider: Why not just compare Hitler and Ghandi? Who gets your vote?
So, which one is Hitler and which is Ghandi?
I am sure Hitler got the Christian vote but how is Ghandi an atheist?
I am going for the atheist. But there will come a day when we wish we were playing war games with those atheist in the USSR that felt life was worth not destroying the world over religious belief systems. We may have met our true match. The problem with fundamentalist is that everyone else is wrong and belongs in hell.

You are changing the scenario as a way to answer the question.I'l pose another question:

Try again.
Who gets your vote? Why?

Ah yes.... yearning for the good old days of MAD. This is indeed a much more dangerous time. As f'd up as the USSR was, they did not believe the destruction of the planet was a forgone conclusion and something to look forward to as the savior returned. They could be negotiated with - which worked for decades. It is much more difficult to negotiate with religious terrorists - especially home-grown Christian terrorists. Once you get God involved, all bets are off.

I would vote for Hilary if I could spell her name. I am just afraid who ever gets in next is going to have a mess and catch all the crap for this one.
Then we will swing back and get another 4 years before we come to our senses. I hope he or she is gay and it is a sign that we have become civilized. I would like to se some one that actually gave a crap about the poor and quit blaming the victims of a system that rewards the rich and big business. As job disapper crime goes up and they just don't get it. I think ever human on this planet should be feed clothed and sheltered and have the option of going to school all the way thru college with no questions asked. Then maybe phone transportation and TV because that is how we are now getting our information. Medical insurance would be nice and instead of 900 billion world wide on military we spend it on people and maybe 30 billion to protect us from bears.
What do you think? I got to go pick up some food for my girl friends.

Well, in this scenario, I would vote for my fellow atheist. But given the situation you have described, that is not too surprising, is it?
Perhaps for us non-theists, you might have restated the question.
Cmass restated for non-theists could have wrote:I do not intend for this to be a debate about to our current administration.

The other candidate is an atheist. He has a beautiful wife and children. He is from South Carolina. He believes in family values as aspoused by fundamentalist Christians, is fiscally conservative and believes that liberalism has become tyranical and that Christians are persecuted.
Who gets your vote?
But that would not make any sense!
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

Holy cow! This is even more than the 4.5 billion Christian industry!900 billion world wide on military
Actually, the $ from the Iraq war all by itself would come very close to enough money to end our dependence on foreign oil and a very long way toward elimination of our contribution to greenhouse gases. Oh well, creating terrorists is more important: It brings us closer to the prophecy of apocolypse. If it don't happen by God, by golly we'll make it happen, by God.
---------------- Still, would like to hear Easyrider's further elaboration of the Hilter/Gandhi scenario.---------------
At least that much for bear protection!30 billion to protect us from bears.
