Made it back. A modem went bad -- company sent me another -- that was incorrect for my service -- got the right one and finally everything is straightened out -- five days later.

My (thankfully brief) outage was due to a more obvious cause. The blizzard brought down some trees knocking the cable out. Since the public services around here are quite good, the roads got ploughed almost as soon as the snow ended. (That is Priority One in this neck of the woods. Nothing is walking distance.) And the cable company did their finest thing to get everything back together again. Then I got an email from the cable company apologizing for the outage.
