There is a tradition in Christian thought that God can be contemplated emotionally (instead of in a purely intellectual manner), and that art and music can elevate the mind in this regard.
Here's an example of music composed to help one contemplate God emotionally by Liszt, who was ordained as a deacon in the Catholic Church later in life.
Probably the most famous example of a composer composing "for God" is Bach. Nearly everything he wrote was from a religious perspective.
