A very logical approach to religion

Post by whoneedsgodanyway? »

Hi,

I'd just like to say a few words about myself.

I am a devote atheist. This means I disagree with the idea of faith as a reasonable argument for governing my decisions in life.

This may sound strange and unemotional to many people, however I have come to this decision after much through at it is more to do with what I think is the best way to move forward for me, rather than any emotionally triggered disillusionment.

I would just like to expel a myth about Atheism; to not believe in a higher being is not a belief; it doesn't require faith, in fact quite the opposite. It is the logical decision based on the evidence humans have at their disposal (and I'm afraid I can't count a bible that has been written by many writers, often a number of years after events, and translated into many languages with 'meaning altering' punctuation added on the way - the original text had no punctuation-).

I apologize, I'm already arguing in my introduction!

I'd just like to close by saying, theism is a decision to believe in something greater than ourselves when there is no proof for such a thing. The question I would like theists to ask themselves is 'Do I have a good enough reason to believe in a God?'

I look forward to some good discussions!

Thanks,
Dave

Welcome to the forum.

Unlike some who enter Christianity through emotion, my path was more along the rational path to Christianity. I'm quite selective on the debates I engage in, but I hope we can sometimes cross paths in a debate in the future.

Welcome Dave. Great intro. Always good to know where people stand.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

Re: Otseng

It's good to finally meet someone who has made a decision to follow Christianity based on logical reasoning. The religious people I've spoken to in the past eventually use faith as a conclusive defense; in a logical argument the whole discussion breaks down, which is very frustrating!

I also look forward to hearing your thoughts on various issues.

I know what you mean. And I hope you'll find the discussions here a bit more logical than what you'll find elsewhere.

Welcome! I hope you enjoy the forum as much as I have in my first few days here! :) I also came to my faith based on logic and reason...blind faith is something that never sat well with me. While I admire those who have this unbelievable faith, it is just not the right path for me. (however I will never tell my grandmother that! ;) ) Hope to see you around the circuit!
