Hmmm How about a discussion about which theories you like and dislike.
My favorite.
I've been increasingly convinced that the show is structured around John Locke's (the philosopher, not the character's) idea that cognitive development proceeds from a tabula rasa, or "blank slate." As someone pointed out, this idea seems central to the show- It was, in fact, the name of the very first episode after the pilot and the episode in which Locke regained the ability to walk seemed to suggest metaphorically that his philosophy "had been given legs" on the island. As I see it, the show isn't about the afterlife or purgatory as some have suggested but rather about the pre-life, specifically of Claire's baby- Not symbolic of what happens to the soul after we die but rather what happens to the soul before we're born. This would be just the kind of Twilight Zone ending that I imagine this show having.
It also seems to me that the central theme of the show is rebirth and is strewn with symbolism that has long been associated with this. The hatch in the ground, for example, is such a metaphor, as is the triangle on the map. For me the most compelling symbolism supporting this theme was demonstrated in the episode involving Charlie in which he was literally and figuratively reborn- Clawing his way out of a womblike cave which symbolized a moth's cocoon. This is a transformation that all the characters have undergone but was most clearly demonstrated in this episode.
Someone else was able to better express my basic hunch better then I, but the way I have been viewing it is that the show is a representation of Locke's tabula rasa concept, that Claire's child will be the tabula rasa, and that the characters on the show are the representations of the virtues, vices, and sensations that go into the formation of identity, or "soul" if one prefers the more spiritual. As the show develops, I suspect, the various characters will play pivotal, and highly symbolic roles, in the development of Claires child. I formed this opinion based on how I think the show will end. I also am questioning what effect a child born on the island will have when all the characters have had some effect on the enviroment based on their past lives prior to the crash. This mechanic applied to a baby born on the island would make the island and the characters on it a manifestation of what happened to the child before it was born, or something along those lines.
As I imagine it, a possible ending for the show based on this scenario will be with Claire's child escaping the island with the help of the other characters who will remain trapped there forever...
As the island fades from view and disappears the camera suddenly shifts to the image of a newly born child- delivered by Jack in a hospital populated with all the characters from the island, including a man in a wheelchair named Locke and his wife Rousseau.
