Howdy

I found this forum through a random search, and have been "lurking" for a few days. It's refreshing to find a forum that encourages respectful and intelligent religious debate, at least from what I've read over the past few days.

I study and teach religion ("western" mostly) at a secular university, hence my interest in this forum. I look forward to taking part in the many interesting discussions from all viewpoints.

Welcome to the forum fried_okra. I take it you teach at a university in the South?

Ha ha, no, but I am certainly from the south and wish to return as soon as I finish my studies.

Welcome fried_okra

I hope that you can bring your learning and various perspectives to bear on some of our debates.

Thank you for the welcome! I'm hoping to learn as well, and hopefully not stick my foot in my mouth. :D

Welcome fried-okra! Hope you hang around and get involved in the forums.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

Some find it very distracting. It used to distract me a lot at first too, but now I don't notice it much.
