The fool [a] says in his heart,
"There is no God."
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good. - Psalm 14:1
"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." - Proverbs 23:7
The heart is a pump. The mind is what the brain does. This is an evidence based conclusion. The Bible keeps referring to the heart as the seat of thoughts. People used to think that the brain is an organ for cooling the blood and the heart is where the mind is. It seems that the Biblical God didn't know any better either. Doesn't this show that the Bible is a human construct and not of divine inspiration?

Please do try to be constructive. This topic is on its death-bed already... not many people today would seriously hold that the heart is more than just a pump -- in an age where heart-transplants and the use of synthetic (and animal!) parts are commonplace. This brings us to Theseus' paradox which raises the question of identity when something has had all its component parts replaced.Quixotic wrote:Not to add anything constructive here but....niiiceChristianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magic tree.

That's an interesting one.QED wrote:This brings us to Theseus' paradox which raises the question of identity when something has had all its component parts replaced.
Perhaps 'identity' is simply something we create, either for ourselves or to bestow on others. Perhaps it doesn't exist beyond that.
If you get a heart transplant you remain as 'you' in my eyes because I maintain that identity for you. Even if it were possible to transplant your brain, I might still consider identifying 'you' as the same entity, but I might not.
Even your own decision about you, with your new brain, could be arbitrary. I'd guess it would depend upon how your new brain views your new body and what you want to class as 'you'.
The more I think about it, the more arbitrary identity seems to be.
I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. (Stephen Roberts)

I was asking my brother about that the other day when I noticed I needed a new broom. I could replace the handle or the brush or both. It would still be something I hate using. It is all in the perception.HughDP wrote:That's an interesting one.QED wrote:This brings us to Theseus' paradox which raises the question of identity when something has had all its component parts replaced.

That just about sums it up. Thank you so much for posting this. I laughed out loud!Nec Spe Nec Metu wrote:"Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magic tree."
Isn't that about right?
