Calvinists? Arminians?
Post #1Just out of interest, I was wondering what sort of spread here? Self description is the only requirement...

I'm more Calvinist than anything else, but I only agree with four of the five main points of Calvinism (not the Limited Atonement), and I do believe any of them can be taken to an extreme.

Really, I have a sister in the crowd. Very good. You say that you are only four point? Try seven point? LOL! Double predestination and best of all possible worlds is something I would hold to.
Perhaps we can discuss these issues later, perhaps why you would choose to so deny the L. I do not, myself, understand how one can deny any one point and yet retain others, but perhaps you can enlighten me.

If I were to choose one, I would describe myself as Arminian. However, I do not discount Calvinism. I touch upon this a little bit in exploring the question, If God knows everything, then how can man have a free will?

Of course if you chose you would be Arminian. As it is automatically a given that if you believe you can choose than you must be Arminian.

The thought of a debate on Calvinism is tempting, but at this point I think there are more vital issues under debate, and that I should spend my time on those. Maybe eventually . . .

Hannah,
given that there's already a whole subforum on Creationism here, which if you ask me misses the Christian message entirely, I think Calvinism would be a fascinating discussion. I myself would describe myself as an Arminian - however I'd be fascinated if there were an open theist here, because I find it a very interesting POV.
Anyway, take it easy all!

Well, what I mean is that since most of the debates going on here are Christians vs. non-Christians, it doesn't seem like the best place to discuss Theology among Christians. I do have ideas I'd like to "bounce off" other Bible-believing Christians, but I'm not sure this forum is the place for that.
I guess Joshua was an Arminian.
Joshua 24:15, 22
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. . . .
22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

Well, I'd hope we could use these things to build each other up, as opposed to knock each other down. But the conversations we involve ourselves in are entirely up to our own discernment. If anyone ever fancies having that Calvinist/Arminian/Open theism debate, I'm game!

I would only get into a debate on those subjects based on the Bible's teaching. Among Christians the starting point would have to be the absolute authority of the Bible.
