Easier to believe in evolution

If I just picture God fronting the whole evolution movement. His divine power allowed the Earth to exist and people to be created and evolve and he still fufills his purpose

Welcome to the forum, Brian.

I basically agree with what I think you are saying. I view evolution as one of God's mechanisms of creation.

As a moderatore, I should comment that topics in the debate area of the forum should have one or more specific questions for debate. You can consult the rules in the Announcements forum.

Cheers.

Seeing as a moderator still lets this vague nonsense stick here I guess we invent the question.

That view is called Theistic Evolution or Intelligent Design depending upon how engaged you think your pet god is in the equation. Either way it is called...

PSEUDOSCIENCE

and it is as much a superstition as any other creation myth.

It is a popular view for people who still want their invisible friends but know that Evolution is a fact i.e. it is a cop-out. At worst you would be agnostic on the God question rather than just slot in Evolution around an existing belief.

Evolution says nothing about the origin of the Earth. That's Cosmology and it's a different area. Why people inflate these I'll never know.

As a view it is weak as it fails to address the origin of the God or Gods and again posits something without any evidence. It also fails to specify the God or Gods and provide evidence of this God.

It is also looking to be impossible for this reasoning: God would use Evolution as genetics is a heuristic that is used for problems needing global optimization. Humans use this when you are uncertain of the fitness landscapes. Thus there is no guarantee that a purpose other than Evolution itself would succeed. That's fine I guess (checking my pocket for my Occam's razor).

It also helps deflate the idea that God can see the future even further (and it was a fact-free idea anyway). Other evidence of this inability to see everything for all time is that there are undecidable problems in this universe and thus their existence means that this universe is not deterministic. The n-body problem also is a real tough nut to crack.

So either understand the science behind Evolution and Cosmology to its conclusions or just stay with your faith and ignore science as you'll never reconcile the two.

What was the question now ? Ah yes,

For God to choose Evolution for his purpose it would imply that God is able to see the future for all time. But given that Evolution is suited to fitness landscapes in which you are uncertain of then that implies that God is unable to see the future.

How does God give Evolution "eyes" to see forward rather than the generally accepted view of science that Evolution is "blind" ?

To be fair (i guess anyway?)

Their view of God is that he is omniscient, so he knows everything that will happen, evolution is deterministic so would be possible.

Ie he hits the first billiard ball and knows exactly the path it will take and all ensuing consequences.

oh no wait....they believe in true free will in the classical sense.

mmmmm :-k

Besides if this kind of absentee landlord does exist (for which we have no evidence, which i suppose i kind of the point) then why believe your version of god is real? Its irrelevant.

It's easier to believe in meteorolog if I just picture Zeus fronting the whole storm weather systems. His divine anger allows lightning to exist and rain to be created and fall and He still fufills his purpose

I thought Thor had a hammer and Zeus tossed lighting bolts.
I guess I could look it up as I can't remember enough to say with any certainty.
Where did I put my book on myths?
I am in luck because the my “Dictionary of Mythology" was on the shelf above me and I didn't feel like going to the other side of the room where I last saw the book. I do remember now putting it above me with the other references when I was sorting for library donations.
Let's see. “Apparently, he was a rain god, the god of the sky, of the thunder and the thunderbolt”(p. 300). Thor: “The god of thunder...more like one of the giants then like one of the gods...he is famed for his hammer (the thunderbolt)...”. I seems you are both correct except one was Greek and the later was Norse.
Aren't you guys glad I am here?

Seriously, no other branch of science has to endure this degree of douchebaggery. We don't feel the urge to superimpose deities anywhere else except for evolution... and it's retarded. I'm truly sick of it. Here we are, living in the 21'st century... operating on beating hearts... cloning organs... launching sattelites... traveling around the world in hours...

We have all these advancements, yet we still have to swallow the intellectual offal of a bunch of middle eastern goat herders and their petty tribal idiocies. I'm fucking sick of it. Honestly. I realize that I'm going to live my whole life in a society where people still haven't woken up from history... and nearly half the population is yelling, "back to sleep, infidel!"

I don't want to change the topic, but since no one's saying anything else anyways, I might as well.

So before we call it a fact...

here are a few questions I have about evolution:

If evolution goes about by natural selection only, then how did the concept of male and female arise? How is it possible for two separate divisions, each completely dependent on each other for reproduction, to have come about? The only way I can think of is if it was already instituted when life was started. And, if an evolutionist can get around this, then how did the sex drive come about and why aren't hermaphrodytical (if that's a word) animals the only ones in existence, since it would obviously be more efficient and easy than male and female?

On top of that, I have the same questions as everyone else-- probably heard them a million times-- but, nevertheless, I would like to know:

How can the Cambrian explosion be explained?

Where are the missing links?

Perhaps off topic from evolution, but still relevant-- where did existence and life itself come about without any God? And why is existence in this universe so "fine-tuned" for human life? I've heard it referred to as "the cosmos on a razor's edge." The statistics are incredibly persuasive; I'll go into detail if I must.

Thanks
Michael

Hello Brian. I am moving this to the discussion board for now. If you can clearly identify a debatable topic, I will return it the debate forum. Thanks.
