Greetings

Hello, everyone. I am newly registered here and just received an (I suspect) automated private message suggesting that I introduce myself here, and as such intend to do so.

I stumbled across this site from the least likely of sources: YouTube spam. I was watching a video on youtube and read a few of the comments below. One of the comments was not shown, as it had been "marked as spam." Being the generally curious fellow I am, I clicked the "show" button to find out what this censored posted had to say. I was rewarded with a seemingly copied and pasted message claiming to know the Truth About Heaven and urging me to follow the provided link to learn more. Having no other pressing business to attend to at the moment, I followed the link and found a page full of bible verses and explanations. I read through them, and overall it was very similar to quotes on many evangelical pumphlets I'd received. Curiously, the site wanted me to say a prayer proclaiming belief in the divinity and teachings of Jesus Christ (to avoid Hell now in case I died unexpectedly) and only after this did it direct me actually read anything about the beliefs I was supposed to be accepting as truth.

This time I decided not to follow the anonymous instructions on my screen, but did follow each of the links provided for further reading. I got through about the third one when, on it's "links" page I saw, among other things, this forum. This time there was no suggestion that I follow the link, but I chose to anyway as the idea of the forum interested me greatly.

Living on a college campus, I'm often approached by, (along with environmental activists, political organizations and homeless people) members of various faiths who want to discuss religion, spirituality, morality and often the age of the earth. Whenever possible I accept and discuss these issues for as long as they wish or until other obligations force me to take my leave early. While I do this mostly because I know I'd want people to oblige me if I had something I wanted to share with them in such a manner, with the religious individuals in particular I find the discussions very interesting and engaging. Thus, when I saw a link to a forum for just this type of discussion, I was quite excited and registered right away.

I've done my best to familiarize myself with the rules, as directed, and hope I didn't miss anything in my excitement.

In any case, it's great to be here, and I look forward to long, stimulating debate from here on. Thank you for welcoming me into your community.

Welcome to the forum. You seem very articulate and intelligent, and both of these qualities will aid you on this forum. I have greatly enjoyed being here and have learned a great deal. So enjoy being here and if you have any questions, you can just PM me and I will do my best to find an answer.

Welcome to the forum and have a great time.
It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

Welcome. If you don't mind me asking, what is your religious background?

Welcome Voco. Great to see yet another in the ever growing population of ex-christians. I predict that within the next 10 years we will out number the Christians whereever we go. ;)

Some will say you were never true Christians, but I'm sure like me you don't take them seriously.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.
