It's quieted down in the last year or so, but awhile back it was all over the news about how the Catholic church has been hiding or shuffling priests who molested children. The church has over the years paid out over $1b (I can't find the references for that figure right now) in settlements for suits against priests and the church.
The church gets the majority of its funding from its parishioners. I cannot imagine that in general people would continue their charitable giving to an organization that has been found to cover up such behavior were it not a religious institution. A secular organization would likely have been shut down. Imagine the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts hiding and shuffling child molesters. What would happen there?
How does the faithful community feel about having contributed to such an organization? Has it changed your tithing behavior?

Post #2Not exactly answering your question, but here is an interesting article that implies just how much the Catholic Church is involved in various financial activities. If the Holy See's financial statement is any guide, real estate is the biggest revenue source.realthinker wrote:The church gets the majority of its funding from its parishioners.
