Mere preaching of an old fairy tale that nobody should listen to tday.
The Bible is a book of myths and misinformation and the Jesus story where it has true elements, is plastered over with Greek Christian propagandist lies and I will argue that all the way.
Preaching posts put in here are beneath our dignity, and may be against the rules, as no Question is posed for discussion and mere preaching not allowed as i recall.

Are you saying God does not have " 5 great messages that will change your life"?
Also if the Bible has myths and misinformation, how is that beneath our dignity? Maybe its all we deserve or need!

Post #3Now a question for you; why do you believe in a god or that any messages purporting to be from it are anything but what humans have thought up?

Post #4Great question Transponder, and great name!TRANSPONDER wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 2024 4:11 amI suppose we can take that as a Question for debate. No. I don't make any gnostic (knowledge) claim about a god or any messages it may have. I do see reason to doubt the existence of a god, if there was one, that it was interested in us particularly, or that it had any messages for us.
Now a question for you; why do you believe in a god or that any messages purporting to be from it are anything but what humans have thought up?
There is a peculiar trait that we all have access to on a daily basis: the misery of existence! Granted, some people are afforded more distractions than others, but even the most indulgent hedonist will have the agony of the world stare into his face.
Why is the world overwhelmed with misery? Trillions of creatures suffering unspeakable woe. We briefly thought of this as children before the adults told us to put it out of our minds altogether.
What message addresses this appalling misery? Should we pray in Arabic towards a meteor in the Meccan desert? "God has created death and life to test which one of you is best in deeds," Quran 67:2. If the world's misery is our test, than misery is a good thing.
Should we retreat to silence and seek to become one with nothingness? Should we empty ourselves and abandon all notion of good and bad? This is called Sunyata, and is the major tenet of Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many other Indian philosophies. The world's misery has no intrinsic quality whatsoever, since good and bad do not actually exist.
The materialistic view accurately states that all nature does is eat itself, ergo misery galore! I respect this view. It honestly reflects the condition of nature. I'm not playing a trick on you, the materialist is not incorrect, or stupid, nor is he abandoned to hopeless futility. The materialist can busy himself with relationships, hobbies, empathy, contributions, and many other noble things, which certainly are not hopeless futilities!
Now to your question: why do I believe that God, or His message, is anything other than human invention?
Well, certainly the materialistic view is a human invention. I believe the other views I mentioned are human inventions, I even believe that the concept of a divine being is a human invention! Humanity invented gods along with agriculture, industry, and every other thing that was deemed relevant to human existence.
I'm sure you're familiar with the Christian story: humanity's sins brought misery to the world, and those sins and the misery thereof offended God, but God so loved the world that He gave us Jesus. Could this story be a human invention?
Fortunately, I don't have a clever argument to checkmate you with.
1 Corinthians 2:4,5 "and my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."
1 Corinthians 1:17 "for Christ sent me not to... preach the gospel...with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect."
The gospel is not about outwitting a sinner, but saving him; and saving the world goes against nature's inclination to devour itself, and therefore seems improbable to be a human invention.
But what does Transponder think

Post #5That's a good post, polite and open in tone, while not conceding a thing
It appears we agree of humans inventing their gods and religions. That is hardly to be doubted by anyone who has gonne into it.
There are some points, though
There is the claim that Christianity is better based on history than any other religion. i might say that Muhammad is a bit more credible even than Jesus, and a later revelation, but, while people (including me) think Jesus was real, some people (especially me) doubt the claims made about and for him. So, like a lot of religions, based on (possibly) real people, we may doubt the religion as a man -made add - on.
Your approach seems a bit different as mere evidence only validates a case by Fact; and what credit is it to one that they believe what has been proven? No, the value in Faith is that it does not have compelling reason to believe it, which is a curious situation as the Gospels are supposed to be indisputable confirmation of Jesus as divine being.
well, dammit,God has a purpose for we, the goddless, too, as we can make a case to shew that Gospel Jesus is false and the resurrection never happened and can give a good case why not.
So there the Faithful have good evidence they can dismiss without consideration and earn their brownie points with God by Believing on Faith what does not stand up by evidence. And the more compelling or undeniable the evidence they dismis, the purer their faith is and the more brownied points they get.
We atheists were doing God's bidding all the time.
"They also serve, who only stand and doubt."

I don't believe in any involved or interested God...so no.
But the Bible has many useful messages, all written by humans.
Sure, the bible has some misinformation along with some truth, all written by humans. But the myth isn't beneath our dignity unless we swallow it whole. Also if the Bible has myths and misinformation, how is that beneath our dignity? Maybe its all we deserve or need!

Post #7Yes, I agree. Just so we don't fal into the bear - pit that Christian consmanship has dug before us: claiming the good social, moral and ethical ideas all originated with them.oldbadger wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2024 2:01 pmYes.BrotherBerry wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 8:43 am Are you saying God does not have " 5 great messages that will change your life"?

In fact they simply grabbed what ethical evolution had come up with and not only claimed credit for it but - as you observed - twisted it to suit themselves and often made it absurd, unworkable and downright unhelpful.
Who gives a mugger his car and house keys as well?
Who lets his dead dad rot because his priority is to follow Jesus? But we know, the message is, damn' your father and mother; the Cult is your family now.
Who gives all they have to the 'Poor' and stands in the rain with a street -preacher placard? (I'm sure those who do still have a home to go to) and we all know that (notoriously) the True Believers does not pray in private, but makes a public display of it in order to garner brownie points, or at least, Votes and sometimes, money.
No, the modern day Believer at least cherry - picks what they like, (and I have seen this excused as 'what's wrong with doing the good and ignoring the rest?' Because it means the Bible is not the guide to the moral code you are using to judge the Bible). Or indeed invert, twist and even invent whatever suits them and claim that is somehow Christianity. And there can surely be no doctrine that would consign the inventors to hell - if there was one - than the prosperity Gospel. The uttermost in using religion to scam people out of their money. Though televangelists may we worse.

Post #8Nature's mojo is paradoxical: to reproduce and simultaneously consume itself. One without the other leads to its destruction, but together a stalemate only postpones the inevitable.
Why do human's, to the exclusion of other species, imagine a need to embrace an ideology that will save it? Whether aliens, future technology, or God, a hero is longed for, and a faith is exercised. I find this human trait curious, but not proof of anything supernatural.
All nature proves is nature, yet a particular species wants a supernatural. Exceedingly curious!

Post #9I'll ab void the detour into child and animal trust, position in a social group and training as a part of that group, and just go onto aspiration as a survival trait. Survival instinct gives us reations to threats, real and in magined. We imagine a bush in the dark is a threat, because we can't see what it is. In the daytime it's a bush and nothing to fear.
But when there is something to fear and we are in danger, the instinct us "Please, something, save me". I would say that the invention of a big invisible human that we can beg for favors is something we might expect, so something so beyond the scope of human invention that the very idea shows that it must be real.
