Discrimination is good

Post by Greatest I Am »

I have debated discrimination from both sdes and one of my arguements even I don't like to answer but I eventualy do.
In a sence answering positively or negatively can be correct. One is more correct than the other.
Have Fun

You find yourself on the outside of a space ship.
Two space people are floating away by accident and you can only save the life of one.
They are the same distace away and all other conditions are identical.
Except that one of the space people is of the same race as you. The other is not.

Which one will you save, remembering that all other conditions are the same.

P.S.
I did not use the polling function because I would like a brief explanation for your decision with your reply.

Saving a Life

Being that I am the personification of differences, I would choose the one most different, assuming of course I had the time to process such information, because race plays little part in my decisions, except the women I find attractive. I'm specifically partial to two or three races so if it was a woman from one of those three, she's as good as saved.
Not necessarily criticizing you, but your preference shows the effect of what you have somehow learned.

I chuckled at what you said about the women you find attractive. I used to wonder how a guy can say that. But there are certain sets of "looks" I find more attractive than others. That being said, there is really equal beauty across the ethnic spectrum.

Even so, if I were in space and such a situation occured, my emphasis would automatically be placed upon saving "a" life, not much else.

Interesting question. With all situations being equal, me not knowing either party, I would probably act on instinct. Honestly, why is it that I can save just one? I have two arms, am I also holding on with one of them? Would it be possible to tie something on and grab both? No. Then here is the progression of my thought process:

I can't save both so I'll reach my hand out, first one that grabs it, I save. Truthfully, race would not even come into my mind. If by chance I had long enough to think about it, and race did cross my mind as a consideration, then I would likely choose the one most different than myself. You see, I have no race. My mother hails straight from Europe, probably right off the Mayflower, while the other side hails from Ireland. My father is primarily African descendant, while he claims there are traces of Native American on the other side, but I've never been able to confirm or deny that claim. Being that I am the personification of differences, I would choose the one most different, assuming of course I had the time to process such information, because race plays little part in my decisions, except the women I find attractive. I'm specifically partial to two or three races so if it was a woman from one of those three, she's as good as saved. :2gun:
I think that this is the first time I see one of your posts that run's away from a hard decision. I'm surprised with you.

I'm definitely not running away from the issue, it's just really not an issue with me. I made it quite clear, depending on the circumstances, how I would process the decision. I committed to picking the person least like me. The question was, would I pick the person that shares my race. Well, what race exactly would that be? I identify the least with the African heritage so I'd probably pick something closer to what I know. I'll come out and say it, I'm not afraid, I'd probably pick as white over a black, and by all intents and purposes, I am black. But, I had problems with my black father growing up, and I was also ostracized by blacks in the community over my white mother and my music and life choices. I like all forms of music, I was a skateboarder with blond hair, blue hair, etc. So, all things being equal, I would take the person I identify with the most, feel the most comfortable with and that would be a white. I don't like making race an issue, and I was trying to be funny with my responses, more so than anything. Is this better? Because if it is not, define what you are looking for and I will get right to it, because I don't like to run away from an issue, or appear to run away from an issue.

Agreed. What I learned, was that black women made fun of me and because of that, I almost exclusively don't find them attractive. There are many I do, but it's not just a looks thing with me. My mom is white, so I obviously look towards women similiar to her, I suppose. Everything else is just based off preference. I don't discriminate, not intentionally, and like I said, it's all about match, forst impressions, and personality. Because of what I've been thorough, I usually don't get close enough to black women to let my guard down. Things are changing a little though, as I'm not as strange as I was then. I still have piercings, but I don't have different color hair or clothes than some find strange. But it's not necessarily a race issue. I hope this isn't offensive to you, but I know that you are gay. I'm not, but in terms of attractiveness, I think black males are attractive. Not in the sexual sense, but when I see a black man, I guess since they look most like me, I check the look and compare myself. I'm just trying to drive the point home that it's more about preference, personified by life experiences that guides my eye, more so than the actual race.

I chuckled at what you said about the women you find attractive. I used to wonder how a guy can say that. But there are certain sets of "looks" I find more attractive than others. That being said, there is really equal beauty across the ethnic spectrum.

I agree to a point. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I find women of all different ethnic types attractive. What I'm speaking about has way more to it than just looks. Looks are somewhat important to me, but I've turned down plenty of women that my friends grilled me for, just because they thought they were attrative. I need conversation and I need someone that shares similiarities with me, or something particular that I find attractive within a culture.

For instance, I've taken Japanses for several years, and I've always been obsessed with martial arts. Therefore, I find women from those cultures attractive for many reasons outside of looks.

I love spanish accents, british accents, among others so I find women from those cultures attractive. The final decision, is all about match. I need good conversation, not good sex. In my opinion, if I have someone that I can talk to, relate to, and be close with, everything else will take of itself. I rarely find a woman that I want to date. I've had two girlfriends in my life and I've only once went on a date. I could go on but I've made my point I think. Final word: women are beautiful, inside and out no matter what their race. I sincerely mean that. It's not just something I'm saying.

Even so, if I were in space and such a situation occured, my emphasis would automatically be placed upon saving "a" life, not much else.

That was my point. I was being silly with the whole attractiveness issue. I'm not built that way. honestly, I'd probably die trying to save both. I think about issues like this often, and I would save whoever I could, based on proximity. I'd reach out my hand and whoever I grabbed lives. That's what I would do, for the point of this exercise. But I really can't know what I'd really do until faced with the situation. I hope I'm never in a position to choose who lives and who dies.

You all should know, that you are allowed to pick your own race without prejudice.

You are all tripping over yourselves with political correctness.

Unfortunate.

You haven't directly responded in reference to bi-racial individuals. What race should I choose? Race doesn't mean the same thing in 2007 as it meant years ago. I only have one black friend, also bi-racial and he has no black friends. Therefore, you may want to change the scenario a bit. We're answering it honestly and you seem to be looking for something else.

In your scenario, there doesn't seem to be a lot of time to process information. I know of many people who actually would pick the person of their race, but I'd like to think we are above that here, at least somewhat. The state has always told me that I have to be, for sake of profiling, the race of my father. My father is black. Yet, I am most familiar with my white mother and all of my friends are white. Every girlfriend I've ever had is white. If I made the pick based on race, why would I choose the person least familiar to me?

In a situation like this, no one would care if you came back with a person of your own race. But what if, when you got back to earth, you realized the person you saved was carrying a deadly disease, and the person you chose not to save, had bravely saved everyone by throwing him out into space, sacrificing himself. Then how good of a decision was it? Throw in factors and the situation changes. To choose to save a person just because they are of the same race has absolutely no honor in my opinion. This is why we have Affirmative Action. By your statement, we should expect people to pick the person of their own race. I do not. People of higher intellect should be above such factors as decisions. I see nothing positive about choosing one's own race as the qualifying factor. I picked my choice and it has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with familiarity.

That's so funny you mention that. South Park mentions a double standard like that. Basically chef explains you can pick on an asian because they're from asia, you can't pick on an asian american, because that's just wrong. lol.

But with whites its a little more difficult. If I go to the bar and make fun of the irish, there's a good chance I'll get the crap kicked outta me, when the people there just associate themselves with their irish heritage, even though they're 1/30ths indirect irish decent, if that.

Has this topic even reached the idea of heritage at this point?
