The discovery/ science channel daveled in the ideas of future advancements in their premiere short series: 2050. Though it gave us a world based on insurance owning our lives, cybernetics and a huge step in the medical field, I think there was one topic that really interest me the most, but goes completely unmentioned.
prosthetics.
Frankly if we ever get to the point where we're literally plugging ourselves into the internet, I'd be pretty amazed. But if given the chance to have a cybernetic body, even though I'd spend my life paying it off, I'd say sign me up.
Christians would have a huge fit about that I guarentee. Any input?

Post #2Being a Christian, why would I be upset with you for using a waldo instead of your own body??sledheavy wrote:The discovery/ science channel delved into the ideas of future advancements in their premiere short series: 2050. Religion is concerned with the mental process more then what the body is doing. The mind is the root of all thoughts and thoughts are what determine our moral position.
I view the use of waldoes the same way as you driving a car. Using tools only. Enjoy.

Re: Future concepts
Post #3Is not unreasonable to foresee a future where certain mental functions could be off-loaded onto a processor. Assuming there could be cybernetic chipsets that take neuron action potentials and translate them into digital signatures, we should be able to use bio-calculators, for example. Why not bio-oneclick ordering from online retailers -- the real meaning of impulse buy!
Prosthetic technology is almost to the place where robotic limbs can be controlled by brain signals:

There should be very little conflict with any religion regarding prosthetics of this sort, unless the prosthetic devices are used for sexual or pseudo-sexual purposes. Teledildonics used to be a field where the prosthesis was sexual in nature. Haven't heard much about that recently. But there are other religious no-nos. How about a cyber stomach that can process food more efficiently than biological stomachs and therefore will be able to handle more food at once? That might lead to gluttony. We already have robotic arms that have replaced certain assembly line workers and which has led to sloth. The possibility for blasphemy by proxy is always there.

Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings forgotten. -- George Orwell, 1984

Pleasing to God
Post #4All technologies have a potential good and evil. History shoes that both come into play at some point in history.
Nevertheless, I am sure that on the scale of good and evil any so called embellishment to God's universe has already come to His mind.
It pleases God to see man develop to this point.
God told us to reproduce and learn and we are doing just that. We should all be pleased any innovation in our lifestyles.

Post #5actually, I give you a lot of credit for that statement. Obviously I overgeneralized, and I apologize for that. Thank you for your empathy.Greatest I Am wrote:Being a Christian, why would I be upset with you for using a waldo instead of your own body??sledheavy wrote:The discovery/ science channel delved into the ideas of future advancements in their premiere short series: 2050. The whole idea opens up a lot of thought to me. It is mental processes, that's for sure. Maybe just the idea of the body becoming outdated....idk, it's interesting.
