Is it better to take a job that pays more to us, or is it better to take a job that improves the world, but doesn't pay that many $?
In other words, where does our primary loyalty lie, to ourselves, or to our world?
Best wishes, 2RM.
So, this is a choice...

Re: So, this is a choice...
Post #11Well, the subversive intent behind the question was partly to offer people a reason for being beyond their own gratification. In the British army, that reason has always been 'for Queen and Country'. That may seem a little dated, these days, but it has engendered no end of sacrifices, both large and small. For the rest of us, if we are looking for a cause to live and die for, I can think of none better than 'to Save the World for the Common Good'. It is interesting how liberating such idealism can be. And it is, as well, I have noticed, a short route out of depression and into happiness (by which I mean a deep and lasting contentment). On these grounds I commend such idealism to the forum, however 'narcissistic' it might, on first familiarity, seem. Of course, one first must leave behind the corrosive cynicism that afflicts the civilised world, and be prepared to get involved in projects greater and more important than oneself.Wootah wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2018 4:12 pmIt's fantasy if not narcissism to imagine that one can improve the world.2ndRateMind wrote: Is it better to take a job that pays more to us, or is it better to take a job that improves the world, but doesn't pay that many $?

And it might even be that through such thinking, we can actually achieve our goal.

Idealism kills far too many. All the best evil actors are idealistic first, then they act on those ideals second. Then the British soldiers have to go to work to clean up the mess.

Post #13Life in itself is a dangerous thing, with a 100% mortality rate. The issue is, do we want something to live and die for, or just a complacent comfort that serves no-one any good, least of all ourselves? The meaning of life may well be beyond our capacity to discern, but we can at least find meaning in life.Wootah wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 5:49 am [Replying to 2ndRateMind in post #11]

Post #14Yes, indeed. I notice we no longer crucify itinerant rabbis, for example. Or keep slaves, or if one does, it is largely illegal through out the world, and we can expect the law to take an interest.Aetixintro wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2018 5:05 pmI strongly disagree! The pen is as powerful today as before. Morally, the World has moved forward tremendously! Just check out history for voting rights, for immigration, for aid work, for implementation of human rights into actual legislation etc. However, as with everything else, there are bad writers and there are good writers. It's what you make out of it. Leaving people to Atheism isn't exactly what I intend to do. It is the battle for people's hearts and minds and as before, if you practice what you preach you gain ground with (the right) people!Wootah wrote:It's fantasy if not narcissism to imagine that one can improve the world.2ndRateMind wrote: Is it better to take a job that pays more to us, or is it better to take a job that improves the world, but doesn't pay that many $?

Post #15A good job and protecting the environment/being of service to our world don't have to be exclusive. Otherwise, we need to balance our lives with our world.2ndRateMind wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2017 11:18 am Is it better to take a job that pays more to us, or is it better to take a job that improves the world, but doesn't pay that many $?

Post #16People tend to forget that they're a part of the world.
So, even if "making the world better" is the primary goal, you still count, too.
