Is Theology, in terms of a valid philosophy, (not personal "faith") dead?

When did Theism die?

Post by daedalus 2.0 »

Don't get me wrong. I know a lot of people still think it is thriving. Many people still believe God is alive and that Theism is a viable inquiry. A lot of people also think Elvis is alive.

My question is this: The arguments for God have been made and answered. There has been no new argument and they all rest on a few basic fallacies.

Unless new information comes to light in String Theory or Quantum Mechanics, I don't see anything new on the Theology horizon any time soon.

I don't think there have been any new Theologians that offer any new arguments, only re-hashed variations of ancient arguments: Argument from Ignorance, from Design, from First Cause, Pascal's Wager, etc.

And, the theologians on this board offer nothing. It's as if the 20th century passed without notice - except for their insistence that C.S. Lewis was great.

I know I sound jaded, but seriously, where are the modern theologians? God dammit, if God exists, let me know!
Imagine the people who believe ... and not ashamed to ignore, totally, all the patient findings of thinking minds through all the centuries since the Bible.... It is these ignorant peoplewho would force their feeble and childish beliefs on us...I.Asimov

It seems pretty clear to me that theology is not only alive, but is progressing into a more reasonable understanding of God.

It seems as man evolves, so does our understanding of ourselves and our spirituality. Today, many people actually base their faith on the internal knowledge of God and not as much on texts or man-made religions.

As time goes on, less of us are creating Him in our own image and we accept that He is within. We are able to see science and theology work together to explain the creation of God, instead of dismissing those great discoveries.

I think 'religions' may be less popular than they once were due to this and statistics seem to indicate this. However, discarding a religion is not the same as discarding God or the belief in Him.

OK, How have we come to understand god and spirituality more?

From my perspective it seems that science, and the general course of humanity has pointed irreversibly towards a more and more vague definition of God and less and less of a claim of the existence of "spirit".

In the past 6000 years what new discoveries have we made in how our spirit works, where it resides, etc.

Perhaps you take it all to mean that we've discovered that God and Spirit are undetectable and immaterial...? That is, I think thats exactly what we have found out about pixies, santa, aliens, ghosts, etc.
