Daniel 9:27, confirming the covenant

The verse under discussion will be, Daniel 9:27, “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week (7 years): and in the midst of the week (He was crucified) he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

Two questions need to be answered here. Is the verse speaking of 70 A.D. or is it speaking of end times? If 70 A.D., there are only three possibilities that can be drawn from verse 26. It will be either the Messiah, General Titus or Vespasian, then Caesar of Rome. I know of no covenant Titus or Vespasian signed with Israel, so the prophecy has to be pointing to the future.

If so, the new covenant is to be confirmed by the Lord Jesus, or by the antichrist.

I have good reason to believe the confirming of the new covenant with the Jews has been assigned to Jesus Christ, not to the antichrist. Following are my reasons.

Isaiah 42:6, “I the LORD (Father) have called you (Jesus) in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and give you for a covenant of (to) the people for a light of the Gentiles;”

Jeremiah 31:31, “Behold, the days come, said the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:”

Malachi 3:1, “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me (John the Baptist): and the Lord (Jesus), whom you (Israel) seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant.”

Luke 22:20, Jesus is speaking to his disciples “This cup is the New Testament (or covenant) in my blood, which is shed for you.”

The prophecy of Daniel also declares that the messenger and the covenant will be cut off in the midst (half way through) the seven years, leaving 3 ½ years.

We know Jesus’s ministry began at his baptism in October of 27 A.D., at the age of 30, and ended on the cross on the day before the Passover in April 31 A.D, exactly 3 ½ years.
