Terrorist strike in Turkey. A few weeks later there's a military coup. In the midst of instability and an untrustworthy government, it seems to there's an increase in likelihood of military coups happening.

What is the probability of a military coup occurring in the United States?
Or perhaps it is more likely to happen on a state level instead of a national level, like a state succeeding from the Union?

Post #2I think the USA has evolved into a land where already liberty is its own safety valve. The states where military coups occur have a dictatorial Caesar or army colonels keen to act as dictator. USA philosophy moves in a different direction.OpenYourEyes wrote:

There is discontent in Britain and in Scotland but the method chosen to resolve disputes is a democratic one - so far.
Erdogan was and is oppressive. A German comedian who satirised him on TV has been charged - inexplicably - by the Germans. This is a worrying instance of a challenge to free speech. Perhaps in France and Germany there is some chance of a right-wing coup, though it is still a distant possibility.
What we will inevitably see in Europe in the future is an Islamic attempt to overthrow some state or other. Sharia Law and democracy do not love each other and if Muslims attain a majority in any country, then there is a good chance they move towards a theocracy.
We already have a Muslim mayor in one of Europe's biggest cities, London, with pleasant results, so perhaps pessimism isn't called for.
