National database and ID cards for Muslims or gun owners?

Post by DanieltheDragon »

Among other things that have recently been suggested one thing that has struck me is the suggestion of having a national Muslim database and issuing faith based ID cards for Muslims. Aside from the obvious parallels to our darker history. Is this a good idea? Is this even legal?

Although aside from tracking people based on the religious preferences would it not be far easier to simply register guns to a national database?

Note: I am not advocating for any database. I reject the notion of both as an invasion of privacy and/or a violation of freedom of religion. The question I pose is which would stand up to legal scrutiny better and which would be more effective at preventing mass shootings.

This blurs the line of what can be considered a dangerous individual. A system of analysis to measure individuals based on propensity to commit violent crime cannot rely on such things as particular faiths in deities. This attempts to cast a wider net of "security", and creates more suspicion and difficulty for the targeted group to integrate into society and remain productive workers. This will exacerbate things considerably, and set a poor example of societal policies in the history books.

A Muslin database and ID is:
  • 1/ scapegoating - and like all scapegoating turns attention on to a minority and attention away from the failures and shenanigans of the ruling classes by appealing to the worst nature of the ruled classes.
2/ says to the Muslim you are a conditional member of this community, you are tolerated for now but maybe you don't really belong
3/ will almost certainly be a stepping stone towards reinventing a new version of that dark history referred to in the OP.
Registering religion or ethnic background is not the same thing as registering ownership of a car or a gun. However on a certain level a gun permit or a car licence is a metaphor to a religious ID. It is a form of permission that qualifies and sets limits on that what is licensed. It is a form of control.

It is staggering this idea is even being debated and a sign off how far America has retreated from its stated ideal of liberty.
