Burn Koran Day

Some passages:

(CNN) -- In less than a month, Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida plans to host "Burn a Quran Day" to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The pastor, author of the book "Islam is of the Devil," is using the burning to urge American Christians to "stand up" to what he describes as a monolithic Muslim threat.

. . .

At a recent dinner in Washington, a host for one of Pakistan's top TV channels confided in me that he "didn't dare" report the story because if he did, "not a single American would be safe in Pakistan." He and the cameraman were quivering with anger as they asked me to explain why Americans hated Islam.

I tried my best to explain this was not the case, but Jones' burning will have great symbolic significance to a Muslim world already feeling under attack by the United States. It will cause undue harm to U.S. relations with the Muslim world and particularly the war effort.

Questions for debate:

Is this action by Pastor Jones un-Christian?

Is this action dangerous, perhaps even treasonous in its effect?

Should Americans be killed as a result of this action, should it not be cancelled, would Pastor Jones share any responsibility for it?

He isn’t hurting anyone and is showing his displeasure for the Koran, maybe if people followed the book and didn’t treat it like crap (abuse it and hide behind a religion to commit heinous acts) he wouldn’t either?

In no way, shape, form or fashion. There are people who burn the flag in America and spit on Jewish flags, there are people who burn churches and mosques, welcome to the club!

He is obviously doing it because he doesn’t care.

My personal opinion is that yes it is.

Probably dangerous, but he's exercising his first amendment right, so I don't think we can call it treasonous.

Morally, I think he should. But I don't think he cares and legally I don't think he's liable. So he probably wouldn't.

I would go as far as to say it is not Christ-like.

Ask Theo van Gogh. Does this pastor enjoy bear-baiting in his spare time?
micatala wrote: perhaps even treasonous in its effect?
Let's just say that he is operating counter to your country's best interest.

Not that he would ever admit to it.

Im a vigorous believer in Newtons 3rd Law "For every action there is an opposite reaction"

Unfortunately innocent Americans would most likely be killed and the extremists will use this as a reason to justify their actions.

When the Muslim community found out that 'westerners' were mocking their prophet with pictures, we all saw the effects it had.
Now imagine that times 100.
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" without being put to the test?
We have tested those before them, for GOD must distinguish those who are truthful, and He must expose the liars.

Osama would love this. Great recruitment results. How long before hate channelers begin howling to burn Muslims (besides in napalm and white phosphorus as is now done in the ME)?

1) I am not aware of any Christian verse which suggest it is wrong to burn the Koran. I am presuming when the word "Christian" is used in the question, it refers to the demographic of people who follow Christ and use the Bible as their source.

2) Maybe dangerous. Treasonous? Absolutely not. In America, burning an American flag is OK according to the SCOTUS. Sad day if the Koran ever holds more honor.

3) Unless Pastor Jones is holding a gun to the people heads in order to make them burn the Koran and FORCING them to show up, then no he should not be responsible. People who show up, unles they have been living under a log, are aware of the possibilities:

For the record, I am not endorsing their actions. Its a book burning. I dont endorse book burnings.

I swear the "christain" thing to do is act as you normally would then claim it is what god wants you to do. Pastor Jones is just a bigot and acting in the name of faith.
Is this action dangerous, perhaps even treasonous in its effect?
Probably dangerous but not treasonous. As we've seen before extremists tend to react to the littlest trigger... this is one big trigger.
Should Americans be killed as a result of this action, should it not be cancelled, would Pastor Jones share any responsibility for it?
Of course Americans SHOULD NOT be killed. If some are he holds moral but not legal responisbility.

_________

I'm curious however as to how this man would respond to a muslim holding a burn a bible day on the aniversery of christain Taroks attacking and killing 300 muslims in Nigeria in 2004.

Well, I suppose it is time to answer my own questions.

By un-Christian, I mean counter to the central teachings or example of Jesus. sacredcowburgers has noted there is not specific teaching against burning the Koran (which of course, did not exist during Biblical times).

However, I think the action is clearly against such central and general teachings as the golden rule and the admonishment to love others as you love yourself. It is also motivated at least to some extent by fear of a perceived threat, and we are also admonished as Christians to fear nothing, except God.

Finally, to the extent it is based on a dishonest understanding or depiction of Islam, it is also un-Christian.

Is this action dangerous, perhaps even treasonous in its effect?
Potentially dangerous, and not treasonous. However, I will note the reason for the inclusion of treason has to do with accusations that liberal democrats in general, and Obama in particular, are treasonous. These arguments often point to claimed effects of policies on such things as immigration, the trying of suspected terrorists, or even economic policy. The logic is that Obama's policies are damaging or weakening the nation, or putting its citizens at risk, and are therefore treasonous. If that position has merit, then I think we could say Jones' actions are also arguably treasonous.

Should Americans be killed as a result of this action, should it not be cancelled, would Pastor Jones share any responsibility for it?
My view would be he would bear some moral responsibility. His actions are clearly not necessary, and a reasonable person would clearly consider them to be inflammatory and potentially dangerous.

People need an enemy in order to function. The two largest religions in the world

have chosen each other. Muslims burn Bibles, Chirstians burn Qorans. It isn't right,

but you can't convince them of otherwise, and they will simple blame each other for

the repercussions, they will never be able to take responsibility for their own actions.

They are little children and will never learn, no matter how much God tries to help, it

is in our nature, it is fundamental to our design. It is how God keeps the cycle going.
