Hello everybody,
I am a French woman studying translation. I am in England for 8 months, and during my stay I have a "memoire" to do. I choose to work on women becoming bishops in the Anglican Church. The main question of my memoire is : How do English people consider women becoming bishops in the Anglican Church ?
Therefore I would be really pleased if you can share your views on the subject with me. I'm waiting for opinions from both Christians and Non-Christians people.
The only thing I'm asking is to let me quote you in my memoire, under the nickname you've chosen in this forum. Thus, I can do statistics and comparisons.
Hoping you'll help me in my task,
Thanks in advance !!

Hello Miss aurelie,
I'm a "there are no gods" atheist from Ga, USA, so I don't know if you want my input, but here goes anyhow...
The Church would be ultimately responsible for allowing women priests, but I consider it sexism to not allow such (regardless of what the Bible may have to say).
I don't understand why women would want to join a religion that I consider so oppressive to women, but I can see that's my subjective opinion.
Bottom line I would have no objections to women priests. Honestly though I would prefer there to be no organized religion, but I suppose that's a tale for another day.
Hope I helped.

How do English people consider women becoming bishops in the Anglican Church ?
Do you mean English people as in people in England or English people as in people who speak the English language?
I am not the first but I am the second.
For every enterprise except religion, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender. I wonder what the reaction would be if your question was, "How do English people consider black people becoming bishops in the Anglican Church?" I don't see why it should be any different.
Statistics: White, male, atheist, English speaking, Canadian.

1 Tim. 2
11(V)A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
12(W)But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
1 Tim. 3
1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop,[a] he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
These are a few passages that refer to Bishops and their qualifications. I believe it is very evident that women are not suppose to be Bishops.

I reckon it is excellent! Australia consecrated their first female Anglican Bishop last year. It is a positive step and in a sense follows the roles of the likes of Pheobe in the NT and examples as to the priestesses mentioned in the OT.
If you are interested and it helps in your "memoires", below is a link about The Venerable Kay Goldsworthy, consecrated in May 2008.

Should they be given any authority?

Thanks to all people that have already shared their views.
@ joeyknuccione and McCulloch : Basicly I thought of British people, but it doesn't matter as everyone can have an idea on this subject. Therefore I accept of course all opinions
@ catalyst : Thanks for the link, it's great !
I reckon this subject is quite subversive as women haven't had a word to say for a long time. They have been banned from politics, religion and some jobs for quite long. But now, mentalities are changing, and women are taking much more place in the society. As far as I'm concerned, I'm Catholic, but really interested in understanding other religions' point of view. ( Well, especially Anglican religion at the moment ). I know the Pope stands against ordination of women : I think that as a job, women can do as well as men. But I can easily understand that for strong christian believers, it could be totally useless.
Thanks again for your answers, and keep on sharing

Prove what you say of Paul.He gives his reasons for women not having authority. He also teaches men to love their wives as themselves. He also had very high reguard for Priscilla and Aquilla as his helpers.

But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.
In context, his reason is that women are more easily deceived.
