Continue The War In Iraq?

Post by WinePusher »

Iraq, along with the rest of the Middle East, has been the attention of much media coverage the past few months. It seems that the big three concerns are regarding 1) The Syrian Revolution 2) The Destabilization of Iraq and 3) Iran Gaining Nuclear Weaponry.

The most important issue to many is the destabilization of Iraq. Considering the fact that we fought a decade long war in Iraq, lost thousands of brave men and women and spent trillions of dollars it would be very demoralizing to see the country drift back into Islamic tyranny. However, those on the left have brought up valid points regarding the deep religious tensions and conflicts in the region that have caused centuries of warfare and turmoil. So, according to them, it seems to be foolish to think that the United States could resolve such as deep rooted conflict.

Questions for debate:

1) What (if anything) can be done to bring peace to the Middle East?

2) Should the United States abandon Iraq or re-enter Iraq and try to stabilize the situation using military force?

I disagree with the notion that if Hamas became peaceful it would fix everything. I think hostilities are far more entrenched

It seems as silly as saying that if John Boehner and Ted Cruz decided to start supporting ObamaCare then all or most conservatives would suddenly do the same and think ObamaCare is great.
it wouldn't fix 'everything'. .. but the leader ship of Hamas does have a huge impact on it.
The situation is a whole lot more complicated than "hamas advocates violence against israel".

For example, Israeli settlements, Palestinian deaths and collateral damage from Israeli strikes, tribalism, antisemitism, access to holy sites, and the ghettoization of West Bank and Gaza will not be solved in the slightest by Hamas condemning violence.
Religion remains the only mode of discourse that encourages grown men and women to pretend to know things they manifestly do not know.

For example, Israeli settlements, Palestinian deaths and collateral damage from Israeli strikes, tribalism, antisemitism, access to holy sites, and the ghettoization of West Bank and Gaza will not be solved in the slightest by Hamas condemning violence.

yet, let's look at the response by hamas to some of those actions.

When Israel took effort to remove settlements from where they didn't belong, the action of Hamas was to increase suicide bombings.

The Isaeli air strikes were in response to Hamas sending suicide bombers into Israel.

The Ghettoisation of the West Bank and Gaza were because of the hostility of Hamas to Israel.

That leaves tribilization and antisemitism.

A lot of the antisemitism is driven by the Israeli response to Hamas' actions. Get rid of the initial violent response to Israel existence, and the violent response in return, and the fencing off of the Palestinian population disappears over time. That leaves tribalization , but that has nothing to do with Israel .. that is an internal matter to the Arab culture.
“What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?
