Post #1I have seen very few dirty faces in the street today. (Midtown Manhattan) The past couple of years there were more around here. Maybe the new Archbishop (Cardinal now!) is enforcing the "got to go to Mass to get ashes" rule. (I would not know.)

That is not what I call intellectual.
Ill break it down for you. The ash used to mark the foreheads of Catholics is made from reduced palm leaves via a chemical reaction called fire. This chemical reaction creates carbon. So that part is true.
Second, Catholics make a commitment, on Ash Wednesday, to abstain from a specific thing in their lives, i.e. chocolate, meat, alcohol, or whatever they decide. This is a commitment that they make for a specific period of time, until Easter. They then resume consumption of what they pledged to abstain from on Ash Wednesday.
You can also decide to not abstain from material things and instead devote yourself to prayer and fasting during the 46 day period.
Please tell me how this is childish and dishonest? Also please show me that it is unintelligent.
