God's Gender

In this thread, we are discussing the Christian concept of God.
goat wrote:n the original language the Old Testament is written in, the term 'Holy Spirit' is feminine. That was in counter to [the] claim that god is always referred to as 'HE'.

[...]In the Hebrew scriptures, God is sometimes referred to in a feminine form.

Madeline wrote:The Holy Spirit is referred to both masculine and feminine. However since the Holy Spirit is just that 'A SPIRIT' you cannot assign Gender to it. However 'GOD' (LORD—YAHWEH) is always specifically referred to as 'FATHER.' or 'HE.'

goat wrote:As far as I can see, it is as accurate to say "SHE" for God and "He"

Yes, Christianity has made god masculine.. but it wasn't totally that way in Judaism.

Does it make sense to attribute gender to God? Is God male? Is it valid to refer to God as female?
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

Would it be impertinent to ask why anyone should care whether God has a gender, or what gender he/she has if he/she does?

My opinion is, since God is spirit, God does not have a gender. Gender is required for sexual reproduction. I don't believe God sexually reproduces.

Why should i care?good question,I care because i would like to know what the basis for the concept of family is,male and female as quoted in Genesis. The Creator made us in His image both male and female. He was talking to someone when He said that.Who?Why was Eve made the way she was?
Even if one buys into the literal Genesis account, the assumption that God directly created us 'male and female' in order to make some kind of statement says nothing necessarily about God's gender. God is still spirit, even in this passage.
Well, just to be clear i buy into the literal account :) so that is where i come from in my words.Onward then,So why do people think spirits don't have gender? What is the basis for that assumption?

The passage says "Let US make them in our image"two assumptions  that can be(and by me are)made is that the Creator had someones help in making Man=man and woman and that Someone would be female.
Ok,believing as i do that Jesus is The Creator(John 1:1) and that He has been resurrected and is still flesh and blood, then the Creator now has the possibility of having babies. With who though,is the question, one of His creations?that smacks of child molestation to me,so that is out of the question for God is Love. While most people believe Wisdom of Proverbs 8 is just a metaphor,I look at what is said and look at the creation account (and the fact that jesus in luke and matthew personifies Wisdom also)put one and one together and get ONE(genesis1:24)as to Wisdom being flesh&blood,I believe that is a future event after Jesus returns the second time.Coming from Jesus side(rib)She would be His equal as God also.So i see God's Gender as seperate He and She yet one person.
