what is the purpose of the Gospels anyway?

The purpose the Gospels were written was to proclaim Jesus was the Lord, messiah, son of God. Never meant to be historic.

The history of Jesus ' life is sketchy at best like an outline. The historic outline simply put is Jesus was a holy man popular in Galilee for his words and works. When he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, he got in trouble with the temple authorities and was railroaded to the cross. That's the historic outline.

But the purpose of the Gospel is to convince people Jesus is the Christ.

Yes, I believe to the best of their ability they wrote as best they could what had been passed down to them by eyewitnesses.
RESPONSE

You are certainly entitled to your beliefs whether true or not.

1. Christianity, New Testament.
2. Islam, The Holy Quran.
3. Hinduism, has many holy books, but most popular is Shreemad Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and Veda.
4. Buddhism, Tripitakas.
5. Sikhism, Guru Granth Sahib.
6. Judaism, has two religious books. One is Torah and the second is Talmud.
7. Baha'ism, Kitáb-i-Aqdas.
8. Confucianism, four texts as containing the central ideas of Confucian thought: two chapters from the Book of Rites, namely, the Great Learning, the Doctrine of the Mean; the Analects, and Mencius.
9. Jainism, The Agamas.
10. Shintoism, Kojiki.

Here is a list of the worlds major religions holy books. Do you believe they all are free of errors and not made up?

Jesus died about 30 AD. The gospels were written between 70 to 95 AD by non-witnesses who wanted to convert “nonbelievers to “believers.

Do the books of the New Testament contain any obvious errors made to impress readers? Have you carefully analyzed and compared their accounts?

For example, did you ever investigate where all those people who were raised from the dead when Jesus died on the cross went? Remember, according to Paul, a man can die but once, so they all must be around somewhere, right?

On the other hand, it could be just a story like so many things in the New Testament.

You certainly free to form your own belief system!

RESPONSE: Actually, the writers of the Gospels wrote stories that had been passed down to them 40-60 years after the an alleged event. It is recognized that there is a Jesus of history and a Christ of faith. Careful study shows that these are quite different.

The "purpose" of the gospels is to introduce to mankind (some of) the events, which occurred during the first century CE. These include an introduction of the Messiah and the events related to his coming, his ministry, his death and the reason for it. But, the main purpose of these writings was to introduce the coming of God's Kingdom to this earth at the return of the Christ. This idea is recorded about 150 times in these writings, which is far more than any other topic.

Hence, since mankind is rapidly heading to jumping off the cliff and it is recorded that the only hope we have is that the Christ will return and implement the government of God's Kingdom upon this globe…We should all be looking forward to and requesting for this event to quicken itself.
