Her name was Ashley Madison!

Post by DanieltheDragon »

It has been revealed with the recent Ashley Madison hacks that over 30,000,000+ accounts had been paid for. Clearly this is a greater threat to traditional marriage than Gay marriage could ever be, as it actually in reality threatens real marriages.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Ma ... ata_breach

Ashley Madison is a "discreet" dating service for married individuals to cheat. Given this background why are there no laws banning adultery in America? Adultery which is typically a massive threat to most marriages goes unchecked. Is it even feasible to ban adultery? Should we ban adulterers from getting remarried?

Now I am not in favor of banning adultery or any of the above. It is both unreasonable and none of the governments business. We don't need to expand the government to regulate our sex lives. However I want to contrast this with banning gay marriage.

Why do individuals who want to ban gay marriage which doesn't actually threaten "traditional" marriage yet refuse to support a ban on adultery(which does) or prevent past adulteres from remmarying?

don't get me wrong I appreciate the clarification. It certainly gives context to the discussion at hand. Also any opportunity to put in wombats with tinder accounts is highly welcome. That wombat jiggle is something special!

It is interesting how the most vocal of detractors often have serious issues of their own with regards to morality. We could probably measure the projection by the volume of the oppositional voices.

Hey at least your consistent.

What would be the reasons for criminalizing it and would you be willing to levy it as a capital punishment?

What would be the benefits to a society?

I thought post 3 was sarcasm?

What I do is OK. What they do is evil.

That's a fairly minimalist position there. Do you take the Christian view that we are all sinners/hypocrites?

I thought is should have been clear that...
What I do is OK. What they do is evil.
...was sarcasm. And...
Hypocrisy knows no bounds.
...wasn't.

A more thoughtful response to your Post #5...
That's a fairly minimalist position there. Do you take the Christian view that we are all sinners/hypocrites?
...would have been:

A. I rarely take Christian views.
B. I don't believe in sin.
C. Not all people, people who believe "What I do is OK. What they do is evil." are hypocrites.

Thank you.
What would be the reasons for criminalizing it
1) If marriage is at least a contract, in most instances adultery is a breach of the contract without the consent of the other party involved. Why should there be a breach of contract without any consequence when just about all other breaches of contracts are liable to civil and/or criminal proceedings? (Divorce is merely a formal cessation of the contract, not punishing the person who breached the contract).

2) Adultery wrecks a lot of havoc amongst families. The harm done can be considerable.
and would you be willing to levy it as a capital punishment?
Yes.
What would be the benefits to a society?
See above, for starters.
