It's interesting that even some moderate Democrat Senators like Doug Jones of Alabama, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia all voted to convict the President. The pundits expected a different vote from them. In fact, didn't Joe Manchin announce his intention to vote to "not guilty" a few days before the vote? (though he recommended censure). Yet even Manchin voted to convict.
For debate, who got to Manchin and the others? Is the "lock-step" natural in this case, or is it the result of coersion from Democrat leadership?

I find it interesting that Mr. John thinks only coercion or conformity could change another person's mind. Could it be, perhaps, those are the only things that could change his mind? I'm not saying it is so, I am just asking.
Even Mr. Romney pleaded conscience for his "defection" and he is a Mormon.

Post #4That went out of the window when Mitch McConnell and others made it clear censure wasn't an option. Who got to Manchin? The Republicans did.Elijah John wrote: In fact, didn't Joe Manchin announce his intention to vote to "not guilty" a few days before the vote? (though he recommended censure).

Re: Who got to Joe Manchin?
Post #5Are you certain that Chuck Shumer did no arm twisting to keep his party in lock-step? After all, that is common practice in politics. It just seems a fast turnaround for Senator Manchin. Let's just say I'm suspicious given his announced intention to aquit.Bust Nak wrote:That went out of the window when Mitch McConnell and others made it clear censure wasn't an option. What you suggest is a possibility, but does anyone know if Mr. Manchin explained his turnaround after the vote? That would sure clear things up.

Post #6Does it seem fast? The guy proposed a bipartisan solution, the solution got shot down, so he went with his second choice. How much time do you think he needs?Elijah John wrote: It just seems a fast turnaround for Senator Manchin.
