Why are people so determined

Post by Elijah John »

Why are so many people so determined to worship Jesus? It is not a Biblical imperative. "Worship Jesus" is not a Commandment. And there is plenty of Biblical evidence that Jesus is not God. (Just talk to any Jehovah's Witness, most seem adept at supporting their beliefs with Scripture)

So why is it that so many people are so determined to worship Jesus? Even in light of evidence (Biblical and otherwise) that Jesus is not God.

Childhood or cultural conditioning? Indoctrination? Or hero worship taken to the extreme?

Is the prevelance of Jesus-worship evidence of a very human tendency to worship our heroes?
My theological positions:

-God created us in His image, not the other way around.
-The Bible is redeemed by it's good parts.
-Pure monotheism, simple repentance.
-YHVH is LORD
-The real Jesus is not God, the real YHVH is not a monster.
-Eternal life is a gift from the Living God.
-Keep the Commandments, keep your salvation.
-I have accepted YHVH as my Heavenly Father, LORD and Savior.

I am inspired by Jesus to worship none but YHVH, and to serve only Him.

Was it? And good for Satan too, I suppose. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. The Egyptians are noted for their civilisation. Israel did what?

Then the lesson failed if they still do after thousands of years.

Murder is the commandment, not kill.
You said this before but the command that everyone quotes is "Thou shalt not kill." Man later listed the exceptional cases - God had no space on his stone blocks.

Evil should be destroyed as needed before it spreads like a plague and infects everyone. I know, now you will say , who am I to judge good or evil?
That's not the thought I had. We have evil in the world with no Sodom-like solution - just silence. The legendary God, so busy on mountains in the past, so fired with divine indignation, so keen to help old wanderers plunder and so ready to demonstrate his existence via miracles is rather shy in days when we know thunder isn't his cough.

And do you see God taking the action you prescribe? Are infants sociopaths? The men of Sodom didn't want to kill; they wanted to have sexual relations with the strangers. The bigger evil manifested there came from Lot, offering his poor girls to be raped.

For me, he isn't a "hero". Many many moons ago, I went through a horrible time. I put my trust in Jesus to get me through it and he did. So when I sing these particular songs especially, these Jesus songs that I like, it connects me to that "person". I don't necessarily "worship" him either. I just give thanks and praise of him for what he did for me. It was God too, of course, but I personally find the distinction irrelevant, in practice. So, if I sing to Jesus, I really know that I'm singing to God too. The word "Jesus", 2 syllable, has a more beautiful sounding flow in the English language than "God".

Welcome to the forum, SeaPriestess. You've chosen a rather beautiful title yourself. It is good that sometimes we get what we ask for and we can then be duly grateful. Why others don't get their prayers answered is one of those religious mysteries. Anyway, not having a prayer answered doesn't seem to deter my mum from re-submitting her petition and who am I to tell her not to?

I can't say what form the resurrection took but the word was that Jesus had risen from the tomb. However this was experienced the apostles believed it happened. In those days it was easy to worship Jesus as a divine being.

It seems to be just as easy nowadays, for we hear lots of support for a divine Jesus. But yes, you're right; acceptance of gods as being a few fleshy steps away from humans was common enough. The Romans had their household gods, Lares and Penates.
I recall on a visit to Bali having a little Hindu god at my doorstep, and he quite liked any sort of offering, so I got used to placing a coin or a sweet in his lap. It had a pleasing psychological effect, so I suppose Jesus does the same to people.

Awww, thank you so much and for the warm welcome!

It's only been recently that I rediscovered these songs which have connected me deeply once again to that time in my life where I was truly saved, healed, nurtured out of a horrible place. The catalyst for that has been my teenage son who is showing quite a natural leaning towards "Jesus". However, when we were in church together, again, rather recently, the profoundness and surreal-ness of the situation hit me like a ton of bricks. Here is my teenage son, in this same "place" where I was just a few years older than he was when I had a very radical experience. So, even though my life has had many twists and turns, I'm grateful for it. I'm also grateful for the fact that my son is getting the same foundation that I received. I'm ok with that. Regardless of the future, I think a biblical foundation/awareness is a very good thing especially when you can witness it/Jesus/God working in action at some point in your life. To me, that's the only way it has any relevance. Anyway, I could go on but I'll stop here for now...Thanks, again.

So basically your saying you don't believe the bible? That's okay because Jesus didn't found his Church on the Bible.

I trust but verify. Men have added and injected a lot over the years. The translation I use for the OT is the JPS Tanakh. It is translated fewer times and has been generally accepted for much longer than the RCC Bible. Who knows hebrew better than Hebrews? Seeking and finding is what I am doing and will continue to do. JPS is an agreement of Orthodox, Conservative, and reformed Jews. Where they disagree is footnoted and referenced. All(nearly) Christ said came from holy scripture which was the Hebrew. The new did not exist. He even used popular quotes from Pharises like Hillel(leader of them at Christ's time). If you don't know, we are a sect of Judaism. And were celebrating all they did, including Sabbathe and feasts, until the separation occurred around 90-100 AD. Rome took over from there....

Because a kind word and threats of torture will get you more than just a kind word.
