Supreme Court rules against Kentucky clerk in gay marriage case
Published August 31, 2015 Associated Press

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Supreme Court on Monday ruled against the Kentucky county clerk who has refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, and the clerk will arrive at work Tuesday morning to face her moment of truth.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis will have to choose whether to issue marriage licenses, defying her Christian conviction, or continue to refuse them, defying a federal judge who could pummel her with fines or order that she be hauled off to jail.

Davis stopped issuing all marriage licenses in the days after the landmark decision. Two gay couples and two straight couples sued her, arguing that she must fulfill her duties as an elected official despite her personal religious faith. A federal judge ordered her to issue the licenses, and an appeals court upheld that decision. Her lawyers with the Liberty Counsel filed a last-ditch appeal to the Supreme Court on Friday, asking that they grant her "asylum for her conscience."

Justice Elena Kagan, who oversees the 6th district, referred Davis' request to the full court, which denied the stay without comment.

  • Do you believe she was right or wrong in refusing to issue licenses?
Does any public employee, or an employee in a public establishment, have the right to refuse service to anyone for "religious reasons"?

She was definitely wrong and bigoted for not following the law and issuing marriage license. She should be held in contempt of court and fined / jailed.

No public employee, regardless of their religious beliefs, has the right to refuse service for anyone. If an employee doesn't like that, then they are free to resign and look for other work.

All this proves is she is a bigot and therefore God must be a bigot.

Christians don't know what od they worship. Her God is a bigot, other Christian Gods allow gay marriage.

The question should be, how many Christian Gods are there?

She should be in jail right now since her will protect her and pay fines she should have no problem spend in the rest her life in jail for contempt.

It's tricky on the one hand when in Babylon we should be trying to make peace and help the city prosper however we should not bow to their gods as per the book of Daniel.
Proverbs 18:17 The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.

For the record
Do you believe she was right or wrong in refusing to issue licenses?
Wrong.
Does any public employee, or an employee in a public establishment, have the right to refuse service to anyone for "religious reasons"?
No.

Apparently "God-given Christian Morality" only extends to other Christians who look, act and think the same way.

I agree that she should issue the license, but only because it is a term of employment. Refusing to flip the switch in the IV in a death penalty case is the same, because it is a stated purpose of the employer. That said, I am pretty much indifferent to civil marriage, because, especially in the state of Washington, it has lost all practical significance.

There is nothing but civil marriage in the USA. As far I know no church can issue a marriage license.

The clerk didn't do her job for religious reasons, nor request any kind of reasonable accommodation, and should probably be fired. She should probably be fined if there was a lot of work left undone (in the form of marriages), and she can afford it. I don't see any possible reason to jail anyone.

This may just be the British/American English difference producing a bit of irony, but:
Oxford Dictionaries, Bigotry:
Intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself.

Sooooo, you are saying that two people can not agree to be a committed couple without government approval? What is the government going to do about it?

In American three, five, twenty people can agree to a committed relationship, without Government approval.

But if two people want the benefits that comes with being a "legally married couple", they must get Government approval.
