God: Fact or Fiction?

Post by JoshB »

Foreword: I will not take sides in the original post. Though I will interact after feedback, I will merely post the Question and Guidelines. And also, I have mainly posted it to make an arena where Theists and Atheists can use their arguments and weaponry.

Big Question: Is God real or not?

Guidelines:

Saying "The (Insert Book) says hes real/not real!" will not be recognized as a valid argument unless that book provides a factually/logically-grounded argument for its opinion.

Ground your arguments in as much fact and logic as possible.

Stay on topic. We are not here to define what God is, if the Bible is true, or whether or not God is bald. We are just here to argue the existence of some being that most would call God.

No blatantly saying "your wrong" without arguing for your disagreement.

No Pascals Wager. It honestly proves nothing.

god, fact or myth

I was raised in a home where we were taught the Christian faith and regularly attended church most of my life. I also followed blindly and also raised my family in the same fashion. I had asked the same questions over the years and just fell for the same, in faith you have to trust and believe. pray for guidance. etc. After all tese years I finally came to the realization that all this time I beleved in a lie. This god of theirs, loving and caring alows chilren to be raped and brutally murdered to epidemic proportions. A loving god could never just sit there and not feel compassion for "his" people and stop these heinous crimes. If he was so all powerful why is it that he could not control "Satan" his supposed arch enemy. This so-called religion has actually, in the scheme of things, relatively few followers when compared to religions lile Buddhism, Hinuism, etc. If he were really the one "true" god his number would be greater than any other because yu can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all the people aa the time. The Christian god is about stories and parables not fact or reality. Simple fiction.

Well I still haven't seen any convincing arguments on either side in all honesty...But I suspect by the continued silence we all must've come to a conclusion while I was out getting coffee! :D Please fill me in!

Is the Christian God real?

Short answer: no, the Christian God is not real.

The God hypothesis fails to add any explanatory value to our understanding of the universe. The God described in the Christian Bible fails to agree with the observed attributes of this universe.
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
First Epistle to the Church of the Thessalonians
The truth will make you free.

OP asked in part:
Is God real...?
A definition of the word real from my computer dictionary defines it:
'real'--..."being an objective thing;having objective evidence;existing as fact."
Under that definition of 'real' and without any actual 'god' to define and pursuant to the guidelines in the OP, I would say for purposes of argument that 'god' is not 'real'. On the other hand, debating whether any 'gods exist' would be meaningless since we have as yet not demonstrated any method by which to verifiably discern such creatures. Therefore any definition of 'gods' would be absent any factual premise.
However, the OP question seems to presume a singular 'God', with capital 'G', so assuming that the OP therefore refers to whether the 'God' described in the Bible is 'real', I would say obviously not.

Okay. Consensus says so far that the Christian God is NOT real.

At this point, we can either wait for Christian Apolegetics to rush in or move on to something different like....

Can a god be omnipotent?
