To all true Christians there is nothing more important to our salvation than "The Atonement of Jesus Christ".
Having said that, is it not therefore extremely important to every individual to understand fully what and how the atonement works for our benefit?
What does the atonement do or does not do?
What is required on our part to receive the full benefits of the atonement?
What and when and by whom did the atonement begin?
Can anyone clearly show all scriptures pertaining to the atonement?
I look forward to hearing your "take" on this most important topic.
Kind regards,
RW

Re: The Atonement
Post #1221It redeemed us from all Iniquity !
Those for whom Christ died can never be of them which Christ will some day say this to Matt 7:23
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
They can never be "ye that work iniquity" Because by His death, one of its grand accomplishments in the purpose of God, redeemed them from all iniquity Titus 2:14
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
The word that is the conjunction hina and it means:
denoting the purpose or the result, which means Gods designed result and purpose in Christ giving Himself for those He died for was to redeem them from ALL INIQUITY ! That result was accomplished through the death of Christ. Neither can them Christ died for be of them which it is written of them this Ps 5:5
5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Those Christ died for cannot be workers of Iniquity because Christ redeemed them from all iniquity, neither can it be laid to their charge !
Rom 4:7-8
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.48

Re: The Atonement
Post #1222It redeemed us from all Iniquity !2
Titus 2:14
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. This also means that those Christ died for shall be redeemed from unbelief/disobedience or else the designed purpose for Christ's Death failed ! His death is to redeem from all iniquity. The word redeem lutroó means:
I release on receipt of ransom; mid: I redeem, release by paying ransom, liberate, deliver.
The death of Christ is purposed by God and does deliver those Christ died for from bondage, and captivity to sin, which unbelief/disobedience is. By nature men are in a lost state captive, imprisoned in unbelief/disobedience Rom 11:32
32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. All men in the Justice of God who sinned in Adam, God concluded them in unbelief !
Now the word concluded is key to understanding what redemption does. Its the word sugkleió and means :
I enclose, shut in, make subject to.
to shut together, i.e. enclose
to shup up on all sides, shut up completely; τινα εἰς τινα or τί, so to deliver one up to the power of a person or thing that he is completely shut in, as it were, without means of escape
We by nature are by the Justice of God locked in a prison of unbelief /disobeidnece. Some Translations catch the meaning of the word concluded by translating the verse as follows:
For God has imprisoned everyone in disobedience so he could have mercy on everyone.NLT
For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.ESV
For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.NASB
For God has imprisoned all in disobedience, so that He may have mercy on all. HCSB
God has placed all people into the prison of their own disobedience so that he could be merciful to all people.
So the only way out of the prison house of unbelief/disobeidence is by means of redemption through Christ. Thats why Jesus said to unbelieving jews Jn 8:36
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Jesus was speaking of the power of His redemptive death, by it He would liberate men and women from unbelief/disobedience, which by nature all are confined to.
So if one Christ died for winds up in hell for their sins in unbelief Jn 8:24, that means His death failed the purpose of God, and yet how many false teachers would tell us that many for whom Christ died shall wind up in hell for their sins that He died for in the prison of unbelief. Such false teachers are against Christ, and serve their own lust and pride ! 48

Post #1223His death must cause or give life !
1 Jn 4:9
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Contrary to what false teachers would tell us and have people to believe, that God through Christ offers to all and its up to each individual to either accept or not according to their so called freewill, which is nothing but fables and nonsense , in fact a flat out lie. The Truth is however that those God so Loved and gave His Only Begotten in behalf of, it was for the purpose of effecting or giving them Life, that they may live [Spiritually unto God] through or because of Him. Now understand something, if this Divine Objective is not effected, for each Person He died for, for each Person God so Loved Jn 3:16, then the purpose of Christ's death came to nought, it was defeated , which all false teachers are teaching when they tell us that some for whom Christ died can wind up in hell for their sins in unbelief like these Jn 8:24 !49

Re: The Atonement
Post #1224His death must cause or give life !2
Those Jesus Christ died for are purposed to live through or because of Him, because of Gods so great of Love for them. This Truth is confirmed in Eph 2:4-5
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved )
Because of His Great Love wherewith He so Loved us Jn 3:16, even as and when we were dead sinners, He quickened us [The church] togehter with Christ, meaning gave us Life. See that word quickened syzōopoieō means:
to make one alive together
to cause to live, make alive, give life
This is how and why we live through Him as stated in 1 Jn 4:9
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Also lets read Peters Testimony of the same thing in 1 Pet 1:3
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Thats because as Paul wrote " hath quickened us together with Christ" Eph 2:5 !
Now the word BY in 1 Pet 1:3 and the word through in 1 Jn 4:9, they're the same word, the prep dia which means:
the ground or reason by which something is or is not done
by reason of
on account of
because of for this reason
therefore
on this account
We Live [Spiritually] on account of Christ !

Re: The Atonement
Post #1225The Atonement: What did it REALLY Accomplish?
It accomplished the full salvation of all for whom it was for. Jesus said in His expiring moments these words Jn 19:30
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
In other words, something was finished, accomplished, performed. What exactly was it ? It was the saving of His People from their sins as predicted here Matt 1:21
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
His death of atonement actually saved His People from their sins! None for whom He died can be lost ! 51

Post #1226Christ's death produces life, salvation.
Antichrist religion doesnt believe this nor understand it, that Christ's death produces salvation fruit, the conversion of souls, its how He is Glorified ! Jesus said when close to the time of His death Jn 12:23-24
23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Jesus here is describing how the Son of Man should be Glorified Vs 23. He is the corn of wheat in Vs 24 and He states what happens if it dies, signifying His death !
His death brings forth fruit, the fruit of salvation, the fruit of new life. Its just like when a farmer sows a seed of corn in the ground, what happens ? It brings forth fruit, life. The words bring forth in Vs 24 literally means to produce [to bring into existence; give rise to; cause:]
The New Birth is the result, product of Christ's death, hence believers are said to have been begotten again by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 1 Pet 1:3
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
The resurrection of Christ displays the fruit of His death, Life ! So those of us who are Truly Born again have Christ's death to Thank for that ! Our New birth is the fruit of His death !
Those false teachers who teach that Christ died for people who never are born again, do Christ's death a disservice, a injury, insult and injustice !51

Re: The Atonement
Post #1227Makes us Righteous, Law Keepers !
Everyone Christ lived and died for, by it, were made righteous, or keepers/doers of the law. Rom 5:19
19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Now Christ's obedience started from the cradle to the cross, to include the cross Phil 2:8 and that made those He represented righteous. That word righteous in Rom 5:19 is the greek word dikaios: and means:
just; especially, just in the eyes of God; righteous; the elect, in a wide sense, upright, righteous, virtuous, keeping [or obedience to] the commands of God;
You see, all the obedience man owed to the law of God, Christ rendered it to Gods Law for the many He represented Rom 5:19. So in truth and fact, those Christ lived and died for are those who Paul writes of here Rom 2:13
(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
The doers of the law ! And whats the promise unto the doers of the law ? They shall be Justified !
The word justified in this verse is the greek word dikaioō
to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous, or such as he ought to be
It comes from the word dikaios, the word for righteous in Rom 5:19
All for whom Christ lived and died are automatically become doers of the Law. What God did, God imputed Christ's obedience to the law for all the many He was a Surety representative in behalf of Rom 5:19, He charged it to their account, so they have received, they incognizant of it, a righteousness charged to their account that has fully obeyed Gods Law as fully as Christ did while He was living upon the earth.
This is a Truth that cannot be believed by false religion ! 52

Re: The Atonement
Post #1228It makes us dead to the law !
Paul wrote to the believers in Rome these words Rom 7:4
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
How does one become dead to the Law ? Simple, it happens for all whom Christ died. Everyone Christ died for became dead to the law by that simple fact alone, His death. It did not happen when they repented and or believed in Jesus, it occured before that, in fact it happened before they were even born sinners. All sinners Christ died for are born into this world as sinners but dead to the law, meaning the law of God cannot charge them with any sins against God ! For sin is transgression of the law 1 Jn 3:4
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
1 Cor 15:56
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
Thats right, every sinner Christ died for, and who by nature is walking like this Eph 2:2-3
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
They are dead to the Law, they cannot by God be charged with any transgressions against it whatsoever. This Truth cannot be received by the lost religionist !
Christ death alone accomplished this, it makes every sinner it was for, dead to the law ! 52

Re: The Atonement
Post #1229Fulfilled in us the righteousness of the law !
Rom 8:3-4
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For all men who were blessed to have Christ as their Surety, when He lived and died in their stead, the righteousness of the law was fulfilled in them. This is by imputation, all of the moral requirements of righteousness due unto God by man, to be summed up here Matt 22:37-39
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Paul wrote in Rom 13:8-10
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
The Life and death of Christ has fulfilled this love required to the law.
Rom 5:19
19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Christ's obedience to the Law of God, both active and passive is imputed to all for whom He lived and died. So He being their surety savior is the end of the law for righteousness to eveyone that believeth. He as their surety is also the author of their believing, for they first believed in and by Him, His obedience to the Law for them was also by Faith, because without Faith its impossible to please God Heb 11:6 which Christ did please God as our surety here on earth , rendering complete obedience to Gods law ! Isa 42:21
21 The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. 52

Post #1230It blesses us by turning us from our sins !
Thats what Christ's Death accomplished, it turns everyone for whom He died from their sins and effects an at one ment with God !
Acts 3:25-26
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Yes, the Death of Christ accomplished the atonement, it brings all for whom it was for into fellowship with God, else it was not a complete blessing, and failed the purpose of God.
The words turning away above are the greek words apo strephō and means:
to turn away
to remove anything from anyone
to turn him away from allegiance to any one, to turn away or back (literally or figuratively):—bring again,
Its the same as Isaiah foretold here Isa 49:6
to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
and to restore the preserved of Israel:
That word restore shuwb alse means to:
to bring back,
to return, turn back
The word strepho also means to :
metaph. to turn one's self from one's course of conduct, i.e. to change one's mind, convert
Its the word Jesus used in Matt 18:3
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
So Jesus death accomplished our conversion to God if He died for us ! 53
