A Little Place to Chat About Video Games

Since McCulloch started threads about just about everything else, I thought I'd start one on video games. What games are you currently playing? What are some of your favorite games? What is your favorite genre?

I'm not really much of a gamer, but we recently got Wii and Wii fit. I did not expect to enjoy it so much. For those who may not know, Wii uses a controller that the console can detect its position in space. So instead of twittering a few buttons to make your character do something, you move the controller as if it was your golf club, tennis racket, sword, throwing arm or whatever. Wii fit comes with a platform that you stand on. It detects your weight ): and balance. So for the ski boarding, ski jumping and slalom, it is not your fingers that control the action but you are really making movements similar to being on the slopes (without the cold or the risk).

Anyway, it is loads of fun. I think this is what electronic gaming should have been from the beginning.

I only rarely play games, particularly video games. Right now, especially as I'm back in school, my main interests are studying computer programming and theology.

However, I am working on writing a text-based interactive fiction adventure game, so if that counts...

Watch out for Acute Wii-itis.

I play a few games. I recently bough Spore which has been heaps of fun. But my usual type of game are old style classics such as Doom or Kings Quest. I've been playing games by Sierra since I was 6. XD[/url]

Most lately my brother rented fable two which ive been playing some. Not tremendously happy with it, but it was an improvement on the first one.

I have spore, but I was rather dissapointed. the creation part is great, but the actual gameplay is pretty lacking. they didn't do enough with the creature phase at all, and most of the phases don't have anything to do with your creature - its just cosmetic. I did have fun making this little creature that has maxed out stats(all 4 attacks, and max hp) but looks like a little clump of grass. people have gotten annoyed at me for that one. they don't seem to like being eaten by clumps of grass.

I'm a pretty big gamer, having a beastly PC, and all current-gen consoles except the PS3. I mostly play RTS's, FPS's, and RPG's, but I'm generally willing to play anything that piques my interest. I just bought Counterstrike: Source, and Mirror's Edge, so I've been primarily been playing those two recently.
Anyway, it is loads of fun. I think this is what electronic gaming should have been from the beginning.

Being from the first generation of video gamers, I love them. I tend to go more for strategy, RPGs and survival horror type games these days. Recently played "Dead Space" which did well to releave my "Resident Evil" withdrawal symptons while waiting for RE-5

Last game I purchased was Assassin's Creed.

Been playing a lot of Star Wars Battlegrounds on the PC.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

My favorite genres are RPG's, fighting games, and battle sim/strategy games. I love the Legend of Zelda series, for the most part, although I realize they are not RPG's in the true sense of the word, they still set the style and standard for them. The Final Fantasy games are probably the ultimate in RPG games, although some of the D&D games were pretty good. Breath of Fire will always be a favorite of mine, as well as Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross. There's probably dozens more, but those are the tops. I like the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter games, if only for the nostalgia of them. I like all those old ninja games, like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi. The Tekken games are probably the best fighting games out right now, mainly because they take actual martial arts styles and incorporate those into the games. My favorite game of all time, at least for now, is probably Starcraft. The early Warcraft games were fun, but I probably won't play World of Warcraft. Diablo II was excellent (can you tell I'm a Blizzard fan yet?). I like the GTA games, mainly because of their ability to go anywhere and do anything. If you get tired of the main game, just go around town, there's plenty of other stuff to get involved in. If they would do that for an RPG, I'd be in heaven (metaphorically, of course). I used to get into racing games, but not so much anymore, although I will play one from time to time if I'm bored enough and don't feel like doing much of anything else. I never got much inot MMORPG (I think that's how it's done). The user created dealies on Starcraft were fun, though. I don't really play as much video games as I used to, no matter how hard I try. I just can't do it much anymore, but I still do enjoy them from time to time.

No need to get defensive, it was just a little joke. :)

Plus, it's not so much the control scheme itself I don't really like. It's the fact that controls all too often become the main focus of the developers, which frequently causes them to neglect other elements like story and gameplay. It's not the movement itself, but the fact that the Wii makes developers forget that there are things that are a lot more important than how you control your character.
