I just read this HERE.
Is it me, or beside the molesting and death stuff, does anyone else find this excerpt hillarious?
(I guess she 'lost the battle'! *__- )
1950s Pinup Model Bettie Page Dies in LA at 85
...Page mysteriously disappeared from the public eye for decades, during which time she battled mental illness and became a born-again Christian.
...In 1951, Page fell under the influence of a photographer and his sister who specialized in S&M. They cut her hair into the dark bangs that became her signature and posed her in spiked heels and little else. She was photographed with a whip in her hand, and in one session she was spread-eagled between two trees, her feet dangling.
"I thought my arms and legs would come out of their sockets," she said later.
Moralists denounced the photos as perversion, and Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, Page's home state, launched a congressional investigation.
Page quickly retreated from public view, later saying she was hounded by federal agents who waved her nude photos in her face.
...The family included three boys and three girls, and Page said her father molested all of the girls.
After the Pages moved to Houston, her father decided to return to Tennessee and stole a police car for the trip. He was sent to prison...

What part of that article was funny to you?
The fact that she was possibly exploited by a photographer with an S&M fetish?
The fact that society at the time dumped so much shame on her that she was hounded by the media, to the point of depression, withdrawal from society and conversion to the largest source of guilt and shame know to man (Christianity)?
The fact that her father was a selfish criminal that also exploited her?
The fact that her life was so traumatizing ther her that she developed schizophrenia?
Maybe Im missing something but bear with me, its been a long tine since I was a christian, why is another persons pain funny?
I've admired Bettie Page since I was in High school. In her time she was one of few women who followed her heart. And she paved the way for others to do so.

Molesting of children was probably no more uncommon then than now. Such behavior may be related to repression of more natural or acceptable sexual outlets. Such experiences, however, have not been related to her later psychological problems (though they may have been involved).
In that era, retreating from public view because of "scandalous" photographs was understandable – and perhaps even development of emotional or psychological distress. Social pressure toward Victorianism was VERY strong (although beginning to wane even then).
Marilyn Monroe and Hugh Heffner were particularly powerful influences in the movement beyond restrictive mentality of the times. My research today indicates that Bettie Page was another important influence toward the movement away from Victorianism (that is still far from complete).
I would not make light of her career, her natural appeal, or her problems. She was evidently a woman who was involved in changing society in what I regard as positive directions.
I was a teenager during much of the 1950s but have no recollection of Bettie Page (probably because I was / am not concerned with celebrities or entertainment). Those were "the dark ages" of sexual repression (at least during my lifetime). Nude photographs were taboo and all manner of sexual expression was condemned.ravenssong wrote:I've admired Bettie Page since I was in High school. Post #4Simple, actually read the excerpts that I quoted. If you cannot see the humor in how they are worded and the implications, then perhaps you might be humor impaired?ravenssong wrote:What part of that article was funny to you?Nameless wrote:I just read this HERE.

Post #5Again, it is the wording and implications of those words that I find quite ironic and humorous. I'm not disparaging the woman.Zzyzx wrote:I would not make light of her career, her natural appeal, or her problems.
